Location
The Grand Hotel is the focal point of Nuwara Eliya. It is situated more than 6,000 feet above sea level, and is the traditional base for exploring the delights of Sri Lanka's spectacular hill country. Temperatures in Nuwara Eliya are more akin to an English summer's day and the town is flanked by the magnificent Pidurutalagala and Single Tree mountains. Once the residence of a British Governor, the Grand Hotel is an experience of old-time grandeur set in picturesque landscaped gardens set amidst Pine trees. Nuwara Eliya can be approached via Kandy or Hatton. The drive from Kandy is about three hours.
Introduction
The Grand Old Dame of the hill country is a forgotten land of striped lawns and flowering hedges, crisply-attired waiters, billiard rooms and hardwood floors and heavy wooden panelling. Once the residence of Sir Edward Barns, a British Governor of Sri Lanka, this mansion was built a century ago and is typical of the Victorian architecture found in some of the heritage properties of Nuwara Eliya. It is the outdoor life that appeals in Nuwara Eliya. Take a walk along the leafy by roads of this town, often dubbed as `little England', lined with tall pine trees, heritage mansions, flowering gardens, and the breathtaking views of Single Tree Mountain in the South and the Pidurutalagala Mountain in the North.

Accommodation
There are 156 rooms including - Standard and Deluxe Rooms and three Presidential Suites with some overlooking well laid out, award-winning gardens. The Governor's Wing rooms are furnished with colonial-period antiques including twin or double beds, with soft furnishings in paisley prints. The newer golf wing rooms are furnished in slightly more modern fashion and overlook the picturesque Nuwara Eliya golf course. All rooms have ceiling fans, and most have fireplaces although these days an electric heater is lit in its place on a cold night. The ensuite bathrooms have baths and h/w showers. The 65 Deluxe Rooms also include TV with local channels and minibar. The Grand does not pander to tv addicts.
Facilities
The Grand Hotel has several venues for dining: the main restaurant - Barne's Hall with hardwood floors and a log fire at one end - serves international cuisine buffet style; the Supper Club, with a bar and lounge area with scenic views, serves a la carte meals in an intimate setting; a coffee shop serves light snacks; and the Curry Pot, a popular Indian restaurant, offers a variety of vegetarian and non-veg dishes, and freshly-baked Indian breads. A cozy wood-panelled bar with a fireplace is located next to the Billiards Room which has three Billiards tables. Other facilities include banquet and conference facilities for up to 200 guests, a health centre and sauna, small shopping arcade, and tennis and golf at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club located next door.
Excursions
Play a round of golf at the 123 year old Nuwara Eliya Golf Club with its tight fairways and testing greens. Fishing and boating is possible on Lake Gregory. Birders will enjoy a visit to the Victoria Park with its landscaped gardens and Himalayan migratory birds such as the Kashmir Flycatcher, Pied Thrush Indian Pitta, and the Indian Blue Robin. Horton's Plains, an undulating 2000m high plateau 28km south of Nuwara Eliya, is also an adventurous day's excursion. The grassy plains are home to leopards, sambur, deer, bear, monkeys and a rich array of birds. A guided tour around a Tea estate and Factory is also an enlightening experience where you can learn about the process of tea production before it reaches your cuppa.
