Media Reviews
"'Commanding its location with elegance and gravitas, the stone-clad Hill Club is the most profound evidence of Nuwara Eliya’s colonial past. Up to 1970 it was reserved for British males, and one of its bars remained resolutely `men only’ until a few years ago. It’s now open to Sri Lankans and women, and members retain reciprocal rights with London clubs. Tennis courts are available to guests and non guests, and the lawns and gardens are immaculate. The suites are spacious and charming, but the regular rooms are small and have substandard furnishings "

Location
The Hill Club with a history that dates back 130 years, has one of the finest settings in Nuwara Eliya, flanked by Single Tree Mountain at the rear and views across the Pidurutalagala Mountains in front. The Hill Club is located adjoining the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club on one side and the country home of Sri Lanka’s President on the other. Nuwara Eliya, an old colonial hill station, lies more than 2,000 metres above sea level and is about three hours from Kandy.
Introduction
The Hill Club has the air of a large, granite, Scottish mansion, was established as an exclusive social club in 1876 by a homesick British coffee planter and offered from a somewhat lonely planter’s lifestyle. Even today, the Hill Club still has an active membership which helps to preserve a distinctive atmosphere. The colonial architectural features of this impressive mansion -- wooden staircases, high roofs, hardwood floors, fire places and antique furniture -- are all well maintained. The trappings of colonial-style living continue to survive here, but although certain club rules and regulations still persist, much has changed over the years making it more relaxing for those spending a holiday here. Now guests have the option of dining at the member’s dining room which has a formal dress code for dinner, or in a casual dining room amidst a more informal ambience. Children under the age of five are not permitted within the clubhouse, but separate family holiday chalets with an adjoining play area is available within the extensive gardens for families travelling with young children. The service at the Hill Club is excellent and some of the staff have many decades of service. Special touches such as the hot water bottle that is kept between the bed sheets when turning down the beds at night, and the relaxing scent of cinnamon and pine that permeates through the property, gives the Hill Club a welcoming feel.

Accommodation
The Hill Club has 39 comfortable rooms within the main building with en suite bathrooms. Red Dot recommends the rooms overlooking the front lawn that have views of Pidurutalagala. The two corner suites are extensive with a lounge area and connecting door to a second room. All rooms are furnished with twin or double beds, antique dresser and desk. The rooms have satellite TV, DVD player, IDD telephone facilities, minibar, and fireplace (no longer lit but has an electric heater in its place to keep the rooms warm at night). The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers, bath tub, wash basin and w/c. The family chalet is located at the edge of the property with a separate landscaped garden and swings. There three ensuite bedrooms here are furnished with double bed, bunk beds, and cot. The family chalet also has a lounge with satellite TV and DVD, dining area and bar. Meals are also served out on the sun deck which has a picnic table and lounging chairs. There is 24 hour room service and guests can order meals from the main Hill Club restaurant menu. Without the formalities of the main Club house, the family chalet is perfect for those traveling with children.
Facilities
The Hill Cub has a large reading room furnished with comfortable leather armchairs, grandfather clocks, a fireplace and a library filled with old and rare books on the Colonial period in Sri Lanka as well as books on nature and the island’s ancient cultural heritage. There is also a bar, lounge area, DVD library, games room with many board games, a darts room and a fascinating billiard room with two full-sized tables and cues that are over a century old, and a small gymnasium equipped with basic facilities. There are four outdoor clay tennis courts with sheltered stands that host the Annual Sri Lanka Amateur Tennis Championships. Guests have the option of dining at the grand dining room where formal dress code applies (gentlemen over 18 are expected to wear jacket and tie and appropriate formal wear is expected of ladies), or dine in the casual dining room where the atmosphere is much more relaxed. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served here prepared using fresh vegetables straight from Club’s own home garden. Facilities also include room service, an in-house laundry service, and a business centre with internet access within the main Club Office, and a separate venue set in the garden for weddings or conferences. The well-kept gardens edged with a variety of flowering plants are ideal for evening strolls.
Excursions
Being centrally located, there is access to many activities within Nuwara Eliya itself including a round of Golf on the challenging 18 hole golf course of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, horse riding, boating in Lake Gregory, bird watching and nature treks. For those interested in culture and heritage, there are several heritage mansions that are worth seeing, the Holy Trinity Anglican Church and the Sita Amman Kovil nearby. Children will enjoy playing in the Victoria Park or a pony ride along the Race Course. Day’s excursions are possible to Hortain Plains, Hakgala Gardens, or to a tea estate and factory where you can learn about the famous Ceylon Tea and its production.
