Media Reviews
"`The remnants of daylight fast disappear under the evening cloak. One by one the stars light up the Milky Way setting stage for a glorious night. A whistling cricket harmonises with the dancing leaves as the passing breeze sways them gently, with its touch stirring your senses back to reality…. The experience at Kalu’s Hideaway will remain in the hearts of its guests, making them want to come back ….’"

Accommodation
The central main building houses five a/c ensuite bedrooms - three doubles and one triple on the ground floor and one double on the upper floor. This upper-floor double room, which is reached through a rustic staircase, has great views of the surrounding landscape and a private covered balcony. A separate two-storey chalet with two more a/c rooms (one double and one triple) has been added recently. All rooms are furnished with solid timber single beds fitted with mosquito netting.
Facilities
Kalu's has ample garden space for children, including a play area with a swing and tree house. The front lawn has seating, ideal to sit out under a star filled sky. Bedrooms on the ground floor open onto a small lounge with a lower sitting area that has built-in seating, tv with satellite channels, DVD with surround sound. An open-sided, covered terrace area at the back houses the dining room and lounge area which overlooks the swimming pool. The dining room can accommodate upto 40 and is open to resident guests as well as those that often drop by here for lunch on their way from the Uda Walawe Park. Traditional Sri Lankan rice and curries and some Western dishes are served here. BBQs are organized on request in the garden pavilion. Other facilities include a swimming pool with pool deck for lounging and a bar serving fresh fruit juices; indoor board games, internet and telephone facilities. Kalu's Hideaway is staffed with a helpful resident manager, Niranjan, chef and house keeping staff. Several adventurous activities are organised including nature walks and bird watching. Bikes are available for those wishing to explore the surrounding rural village.
Excursions
Uda Walawe National Park is 15 minutes away. According to wildlife reports, there are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds of up to 100. Numerous species of birds as well as deer, monitor lizards and crocodiles can be spotted. Feeding time at the Elephant Transit Camp adjoining the National Park is also another wonderful experience; times are specified in advance. Here, orphaned baby elephants are cared for by the Wildlife Department until they are ready to be released to the jungle. An elephant sponsorship programme enables guests to support this worthwhile cause.

Note: Visitors to the Uda Walawe National Park from Kalu's are strongly advised to leave the park by 5:30 pm. For security reasons, the bund gates have often closed at 6pm, making it impossible to return to Kalu's Hideaway after that time.
