Customer Feedback
"Stunning beach location, but Red Dot should never send anyone there with small children. Very dangerous currents and rough seas [July]. The rooms had awful lighting and needed a new / bigger mirror but it was the most wonderful location I could ever imagine. I plan to come back and buy the whole resort for myself. Incredible empty beach and great venue."

Location
Mangrove Garden is one of the finest budget beach properties on the south coast: a simple, laid back guest house offering clean and comfortable accommodation within an eco-friendly setting. It lies near Rekuwa beach where the Marine Turtles come to nest and is ideally placed to explore the beautiful beaches and the natural wilderness of the Deep South. Driving directly from Colombo’s International Airport is a long six-hour drive and it is advisable to stopover on the way.
Introduction
Mangrove Garden has an escapist south-coast setting and a five kms stretch of secluded beach. You take a rudimentary ferry across a mangrove-lined lagoon after turning off from the main road a few minutes from Tangalle town. There you discover two chalets housing four bedrooms set amidst a coconut grove. Right on the beach are an additional five timber cabanas with fabulous ocean frontage. A restaurant and café is set right on the beach and serves up fresh seafood dishes and Sri Lankan rice and curries. Mangrove Garden is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties.

Accommodation
Beach chalets: There are two separate beach chalets – each with two double rooms and verandah set further into the coconut grove. One is a single-storey cottage while the other has two-storeys with the double room upstairs having better sea views. These rooms are comfortably furnished with single or double beds fitted with mosquito netting and have overhead fans to keep cool. The attached bathrooms have solar powered h/w. The Beach chalets are located about a five minute walk from the main restaurant. Best to carry a torch with you at night when heading for the restaurant since you have to walk along the sand. There are two staff members that are located nearby the Beach chalets that provide security at night and will assist in case of an emergency.

Beach Cabanas: Five timber beach cabanas with beach frontage are located a few minutes away. Each cabana has a double bedroom, steps leading down to a lower level bathroom with h/w shower, wash basin and w/c, and a private sit out facing the beautiful secluded beach. The cabanas are furnished with timber double beds fitted with mosquito netting and have overhead fans.
Facilities
A coconut-thatched open-sided beach café located by the Beach Cottages serve light snacks, coffee and drinks. A beach restaurant serving a range of seafood, Sri Lankan and western dishes is located by the Beach Cabanas. Ferry rides, nature walks, and excursions to the nearby wildlife sanctuaries are all possible. The Indian Ocean here is safe for swimming only during the season from December to March and is dangerous at all other times due to turbulence and underwater currents. Laze around the beach at nights and you are likely to see a Marine Turtle nesting or hatchlings swimming out to sea. Conservation of mariner turtle life is a vital element of this area.
Excursions
Go on a ferry ride along the lagoon where numerous species of waterbirds can be spotted along the mangroves.  Visit Rakuwa, a small fishing village situated a short walk along the beach where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species.    Other attractions nearby, include Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be seen, a short 90-minute drive away.  The Bundala Bird Sanctuary is located 45 minutes away.
