Location
Talalla is a boutique hotel and yoga retreat situated on one of the most beautiful bays on the south coast in the village of Gandara, a few miles south of Matara. Tallala’s undiscovered crescent-shaped beach and calm turquoise seas make the 4.5 journey from Colombo eminently worthwhile. The Air Taxi also runs a convenient service from Colombo’s International Airport that stops in Dickwella, just a few minutes away. The historic city of Galle is just one hour away.
Introduction
Talalla has a placid, almost ethereal feel, tempting the thought that Kiera Knightley or Gwynneth Paltrow might slip peacefully by at any moment. The 30-bedroom property is themed as a wellness retreat offering Yoga and spa treatments at affordable prices. Spread across a two acre coconut estate with birds, squirrels and the occasional monkey hovering on the tree tops. It is a tribute to boutique minimalism, tasteful as much for what it lacks as what it possesses. The feeling is that if a thing is not refined, it is not worth bothering with. Those just looking for some simple sun worshipping on the beach or around the central swimming pool are also welcomed. Tallala Retreat’s founder, Laurie Rose, has been a yoga practitioner for more than 24 years and Louisa Sear of Yoga Arts is also a partner. Talalla welcomes those interested in Yoga, Tai Chi, martial arts, dance and detox to use their facilities for group retreats and intense workshops.

Accommodation
Eight two-storey villas are spread across the gardens with each consisting of four bedrooms – two on the ground floor opening out to a verandah and two on the upper floor opening out to a private balcony. All bedrooms have garden views. The bedrooms are furnished with double or twin beds fitted with mosquito netting. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but are cooled by natural sea breezes and ceiling fans. The upper floor rooms have low half walls instead of windows that allows for ample breeze to flow through. Bamboo blinds offer a degree of privacy in these rooms, which will delight many, but which some will feel does not allow them to "retreat" quite as much as they would like. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers. Other facilities include room service and laundry service.
Facilities
Talalla Retreat has a large open sided Yoga pavilion set in tranquil surroundings. Groups of upto 50 can be accommodated here for Yoga sessions. Talalla offers yoga, Tai Chi and guided meditation. There is a resident yoga teacher all year round that conducts morning and afternoon yoga classes as well as monthly intensive yoga retreats. The spa offers relaxing Ayurvedic and aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and beauty treatments. A 20 meter long fresh water swimming pool is located in the centre of the garden by the yoga pavilion. The roofed, open-air a la carte restaurant serves Sri Lankan and western cuisine prepared with home grown vegetables and spices. A pathway nearby the restaurant leads to the magnificent Talalla beach – a one mile cove like bay which is safe for swimming year around. The south coast beaches from November to April, is also good for surfing and Talalla Retreat is located right close to many beach breaks and shallow reef breaks. Surfing lessons and surf camps are arranged at Talalla with prior notice.
Excursions
Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to Rekuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species. Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be seen, is a two hour drive away. Based at Mirissa Harbour, Mirissa Water Sports offers several activities including whale and dolphin watching, snorkeling, sailing, river trips, and sea kayaking. Mirissa Water Sports is a charitable organization helping to generate employment for the youth from the tsunami affected coastal areas. We also recommend a visit to the historic city of Galle and its 17C Dutch Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much of the old Fort, a small walled city with about 300 homes and an old-world feel, still remain with its well preserved bastions, public buildings, churches, lighthouse and a maze of narrow streets.
