Turtle Bay is a beachside boutique hotel perched on a hillock with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. It is reached through the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary and is located in the deep south about half-an-hour from Tangalle. Yala National Park is 1.5 hours and Galle is 80 kms to the west. Kalametiya can be accessed from the hill country or along the southern coast.
Introduction
Turtle Bay is a seven-bedroom boutique hotel with luxurious rooms, courteous service and a welcoming feel that is popular with many return guests. Named after the endangered Marine Turtles that comes to nest on the shores nearby, Turtle Bay plays a vital role in their conservation as well as the surrounding Kalametiya wilderness. Go on an early-morning birdwatching excursion by boat into the Kalametiya sanctuary, relax by the poolside or unwind with a rejuvenating Ayurvedic massage. By night time, head off to Rekuwa beach to observe the marine turtles nesting. The Sri Lankan owner is well versed with the area and is always at hand to share his knowledge and experience. Turtle Bay supports the government Wild Life department in its effort at nature conservation in the area.

Accommodation
There are seven ensuite a/c bedrooms – two located on the ground floor and five on the first floor, named after the seven species of marine turtles. Rooms open out to a private balcony or verandah with magnificent sea views. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w rain head showers and natural Ayurvedic toiletries. Rooms have king sized beds dressed in white linen. Other in-room facilities include a/c, overhead fan, minibar, coffee/tea facility, safety locker, telephone with IDD, bathrobe, slippers, hair dryer, in-room dining, room service and laundry service.
Facilities
The ground floor has a lounge and dining area overlooking the swimming pool and the sea beyond. The roof terrace is perfect for dining under the stars, taking in the sunset, or bird watching. Sri Lankan rice and curries and western dishes are served here. Fresh seafood including prawns, crab and lobster purchased directly from the local fisherman is prepared to your liking. The in-house Ayurvedic wellness centre has a range of relaxing massages on offer supervised by an Ayurvedic doctor. Internet is available in the hotel office. There is a separate small children’s pool and the main swimming pool. The gardens at Turtle Bay slope down hill and lead to the Indian Ocean waters. Plenty of birds can be spotted in the gardens early mornings as well as at dusk. The secluded stretch of beach by the hotel is perfect for early morning walks. Safe swimming is possible here during the season from November to March. The hotel owns a trishaw and boat that can be used by guests for bird watching excursions within the Lunama lagoon inside the Kalametiya bird sanctuary.
Excursions
The Kalametiya bird sanctuary is just a walking distance and is a scenic wetland which is inhabited by over 180 species of indigenous and migratory species of birds. Go on a wild life safari into the jungles of Yala which is home to wild elephants, sloth bear and the elusive leopard. A night safari to Rekuwa beach where marine turtles come to nest is another fascinating experience. Mirissa Water Sports offers watersports such as sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. Whale watching excursions are organised by Mirissa Water Sports during the season from December to April when the seas are calm.
