Location
Dolphin Beach (Not to be confused with Club Dolphin, a larger, package-orientated resort on the north-west coast) is for those seeking laidback, barefoot living in natural surroundings. The town of Kalpitiya is 12 kms north from here and Wilpattu National Park is about one hour away. The journey from Colombo’s international airport can take up to 2.5 hours.
Introduction
Dolphin Beach opened in late 2010 and is the sister property of the nearby Alankuda Beach. This is a property with a difference, with comfortable accommodation in four a/c tented chalets. An ambalama – an open-sided pavilion -- with thatched roof, serves as a lounging area by the sea. There is a beach restaurant with sandy floors and thatched roof that serves up sumptuous buffets. Dolphin Beach is fully equipped for whale and dolphin watching, snorkelling and scuba diving.

Accommodation
The four tented chalets each have two double rooms, bathroom with washbasin, w/c, and outdoor shower; front verandah with built in seating that can sleep an additional guest; and a small sitting area. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, and tea/coffee facility. The tented walls are colourful and blend in well with the vibrant interiors. Each chalet can sleep up to five adults and are named after the different species of dolphins – Spinner, Bottle, Riso, and Pink that this area if famous for.
Facilities
The ambalama is ideal for taking in the sunsets and watching the fishing boats on the horizon. There is cable TV in the office area for those interested in catching up with the news or the cricket. Sri Lankan rice and curries, grilled seafood dishes and BBQs are served here. Fresh seafood including lobster, crab, and prawns are brought directly to the doorstep here by the local fisherman. Guests can bring their own alcohol. Dolphin Beach has two boats and is well equipped with life jackets, back-up boats, back-up engines, and rescue boats for whale and dolphin watching excursions. Other watersports on offer include kite surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, day and night fishing. There is no swimming pool here, but the sea right in front of the resort is safe for swimming surfing the season from December – April. Non-resident guests are also welcome to join in on the early morning whale/dolphin spotting boat trips followed by breakfast or lunch at the restaurant. Prior booking is required.
Excursions
During the season, hundreds of Dolphins can be spotted off the coast here and if you are lucky, further into the deep seas, you may even spot a Blue Whale. The Bar Reef located about 1 km into the deep sea off Kandalukutiya, is fabulous for scuba diving and snorkelling and offers much to see for marine enthusiasts including an array of exotic reef fish, stingrays and several species of Marine turtles. Birders will enjoy an excursion to the nearby Anawilundawa a wilderness sanctuary that has lakes and mangroves where numerous species of birds can be spotted. Explore the fishing village of Kalpitiya and the Dutch period church – St. Anne’s in Thalawilla. Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and located only an hour away is a great wildlife excursion where the elusive leopard, sloth bear, deer, jackal and numerous species of birds can be spotted.
