Villa Modarawatta is a refurbished 150-year-old walauwa (traditional manor house) set on the banks of Koggala Lake. Just five minutes inland from the sun kissed beaches of Galle coast, this four-bedroom guesthouse is ideal for a relaxing holiday. Koggala is 15 minutes south of Galle and the journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about four hours which will be reduced considerably once the Southern highway is completed by the end of 2011. Cut out road travel altogether and hop on board the Air Taxi which lands in Koggala.
Introduction
Villa Modarawatta is a wonderful guesthouse set in an old walauwa which was once the idyllic setting for the Sinhala film classic `Gamperaliya’. This walauwa has been caringly refurbished maintaining its traditional architecture of courtyards and verandahs; ornate doors and windows; and timber roofs. The interiors are spacious and tastefully furnished with Dutch period antiques and local art. The sprawling gardens spread across two acres of coconut and fruit trees that attract numerous birds and even the occasional monitor lizard. A large fig tree stands tall at the entrance providing shade to this wonderful old house. Lay in a planter’s chair on the verandah and gaze out on to the lake and watch as fisherman lay their nets and cormorants patiently await their catch. There is ample space here for guests to spend quiet moments in complete privacy. The southern railway goes by the house and can interrupt the silence from time to time, but this old steam locomotive is also interesting to watch as it chugs along. Villa Modarawatta is rented by the room or as a whole and can accommodate up to eight guests. Bookings are accepted for a minimum of two night’s stay and the entire villa needs to be booked for families with children under 12 years.

Villa Modarawatta is staffed with a manager, housekeepers, and gardeners.
Excursions
The village of Koggala was made famous by the Sinhala author and folk hero, the late Martin Wickramasinghe whose books depicts rural village life here by the lake side. His books are still studied by school children across Sri Lanka. Visit the nearby Koggala Folk Museum that provides an insight into Sri Lankan Folk culture. This museum is run by the Martin Wickramasinghe Trust. Take a boat ride along Koggala lake and visit Cinnamon Island where four village families process cinnamon into essential oils; Fish Eagle Island where many eagles come to nest at dusk; and Madolduwa which has remains of Martin Wickramasinghe’s original home. Take a walk into the village of Koggala and Katholuwa. Stop by at the ancient Buddhist temple where ceremonies are held daily and become a hive of activity especially on a full-moon Poya day. We also recommend a visit to Galle’s historic 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent walking the ramparts and exploring the narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings and a swelling number of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and boutique hotels.

The cove like beaches of Unawatuna, Ahangama and Mirissa are only a few minutes away from here and is fine for surfing, swimming and diving during the season from December to April. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. Whale watching excursions into the deep seas is organised by Mirissa Water Sports during the season when the seas are calm.
