Thambapanni Retreat is a perfect choice for those hankering for secluded surroundings, yet only a short stroll from a beautiful beach. Wander 300 metres and you can loll on the much-loved sandy bay of Unawatuna, yet Thambanni itself is a hidden joy. It clings to a steeply-sloping cliff face, giving it an eco feel more attuned to the hill country. It is a striking addition to the south coast's collection of smaller hotels and guesthouses, classy villas, seafood restaurants and beach bars.
Introduction
Legend has it that Mount Rumassala was formed when the God Hanuman accidentally dropped a patch of land, replete with medicinal herbs, on Unawatuna. Thambapanni perches in this wooded retreat like a large, luxurious tree house. This is a shady and secluded place, guarded by bamboo, mango and kitul trees, sounding only to resplendent birdsong. Monkeys, butterflies, and squirrels are often seen in the trees, and tortoises and iguanas are also common visitors.

Eleven deluxe rooms (triple) and two superior rooms (double) are all equipped with a/c, satellite TV, IDD phone, minibar, and private balconies and ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers. There are two standard rooms, not as highly recommended. The superior rooms are spacious and are furnished with antique four poster beds fitted with mosquito netting.
Facilities
A tinyl, tiled swimming pool, which at first sight might be mistaken for a pond, enhances the natural surroundings. A terrace restaurant offers a choice of Sri Lankan, Chinese and Western dishes. From the highest bungalow, about 75 feet above reception, Unawatuna Bay glistens invitingly.
Excursions
Explore the surrounding beaches, the wilderness, rural villages, and the Rhumassala Temple. With beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean a walk around the headland near the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and verdant jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on "Jungle Beach"- a little-known and secluded beach. Surfing is also ideal in Unawatuna and Mirissa where watersports include sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkeling and boating. The historic town of Galle, with its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site is just a ten-minute drive. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, lighthouse, narrow streets, interesting restaurants and boutique hotels, Galle Fort deserves hours of exploration.
