98 Acres Resort & Spa

Ella, Sri Lanka
Luxury hotel banner
98 Acres Resort is a 36 room eco-friendly hotel near Ella with the most magnificent views of the southern tea plantations, Ella rock and Little Adam’s Peak.

Unlike many of the historic and converted tea planters bungalows in the region, 98 Acres is arguably a little more contemporary in design with the use of granite, polished cement floors and roofs of bamboo and Illuk straw. We love their use of more sustainable construction methods. Discarded railway sleepers are used for walls, paving and even furniture.

Accommodation at the 98 Acre Resort is in individual stone chalets and the lounge and restaurant is in an open sided pavilion on a hill with breathtaking views. As the name suggests, the resort spreads across a 98 acre, privately owned tea plantation surrounded by mountains and spectacular views of the southern plains. On a clear day, views extend all the way to the southern lakes in Uda Walawe and Tissamaharama. A 10 acre patch of untouched wilderness within the tea estate attracts many species of hill country birds and is ideal for trekking and nature trails.

What we love

    • 98 Acres offers great value for money when compared to the more luxurious boutique hotels elsewhere
    • The views are seriously amazing
    • There's a friendly and very Welcoming atmosphere making this great for families and couples
    • If you want to be near Ella and Nine Arches Bridge, this is well located
    • Lots of activities on offer; cookery, Ravana Falls, nature walks, bird watching
  • Don't expect complete luxury; 98 Acres is a little bit rustic around the edges
  • It books up far in advance; this is one of Sri Lanka's most popular properties
  • Ella and the surrounding area is getting very busy. If you want a completely tranquil part of the tea country with few tourists, Ella probably isn't the place for you

Families are very welcome at 98 Acres, but it's better designed for older children rather than toddlers

Designed to be as eco-friendly as possible, 98 Acres does much towards sustainability: the hotel was mostly constructed from recycled materials; the buggies operate on battery power (zero emissions and limited sound pollution),and the furniture was made using local and widely available timber.

Just 2km from Ella.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North Eat India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
