Location
The Nilaveli Beach Hotel sits on 15 acres of landscaped gardens with magnificent views across white sandy beaches to Pigeon Island. The fishing village of Nilaveli is situated about 16kms north of Trincomalee. The glorious beaches here are particularly good for swimming and snorkelling from March to October which makes it a valuable addition to a tour of the Cultural Triangle. Trincomalee can be accessed on the A6 route from Habarana in the Cultural Triangle and takes about 2.5 hours. The journey from Colombo will take approximately 6.5 hours via Habarana.
Introduction
Nilaveli Beach Hotel opened its doors once again in September 2007 following a complete refurbishment by renowned Sri Lankan architect, Channa Daswatte. Devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, this hotel has stylish and luxurious rooms. Calm seas are perfect for swimming during most of the year, there is a large swimming pool amidst tall tropical trees and daily boat trips to Pigeon Island – a breeding ground for migratory birds and a haunt for snorkellers.

There are 43 Deluxe and standard a/c rooms with private balconies or terraces which are perfect for lounging or spotting birds and the occasional monkey on the tree tops.

Deluxe rooms: all have sea views with most located close to the Indian Ocean waters. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, TV, DVD player, mini-bar, electronic safe, and ensuite bathrooms with h/w.

Standard rooms: set back within the garden, the Standard rooms have a/c, overhead fans, mini-bars, electronic safe and ensuite bathrooms with h/w.
Facilities
The indoor restaurant serves a set menu of Sri Lankan and western dishes and is laid out in buffet style. The poolside garden restaurant opening out to the sea has an a la carte menu and serves a range of light snacks, seafood specialties including prawns, crab, and lobster and alcoholic beverages. Beach BBQs are organised on Saturday nights under a starlit sky. There is also an indoor bar and spacious lounge area opening out to the tropical gardens scattered with tall margosa trees. Other facilities include a swimming pool set amidst shady trees, tennis courts, beach volleyball, PADI scuba diving centre (only during the season from April – October), sport fishing and boat excursions to Pigeon Island.
Excursions
Pigeon Island, a breeding site for Blue Rock Pigeon, is located just a short boat ride offshore from Club Oceanic and is an ideal location for half-day snorkelling excursions. Explore the history of Trincomalee town. Visit Fort Frederick, first used by the Portuguese in 1624, followed by the Dutch and later by the British. At the northern tip of Fort Frederick is a cliff known as “Swami Rock” which drops around 360 feet (110 metres) into the sea below. On its pinnacle is the Tirukonesvaram Hindu Kovil. Colourful “Poojas” or religious services are conducted here at dusk. The view of the natural harbour and the Indian Ocean is breathtaking.
