Silva Tree, minimalist and attuned to its rural surroundings, is the creation of architect Philip Weeraratne, a sought-after young local architect, and its Australian owner. Elevated on iron stilts, the villa's second floor is above the tree canopy giving a jungle feel, with the occasional monkey and numerous birds curiously peering in from the branches. Silva Tree is situated on half acre of wooded land scattered with tall tropical trees and medicinal plants. The building design consists of glass and steel walls, high roofs, hardwood floors and terraces that encourage you to unwind amidst nature. The rear terrace opens out to magnificent views of the Rhumassala Buddhist temple and the Galle harbour in the distance. The minimalist interiors are comfortably furnished. The peaceful natural surroundings at Silva Tree are ideal for nature lovers, writers and artists. Silva Tree can accommodate upto 6 guests and is only rented to one party at a time ensuring complete privacy. A minimum stay of three nights is required and the rate includes bed and breakfast.
NOTE: The iron stairwells at Silva Tree are located outdoors and tend to get wet when raining. In addition to many steps, there are also terraces at a higher level. Silva Tree is not recommended for very young children or adults with mobility problems.
Accommodation
Silva Tree has three bedrooms – two doubles and one twin room on the first floor. The rooms are spacious with glass doors at each end leading to a terrace overlooking the jungles. Rooms have overhead fans to keep cool and are furnished with comfortable beds, cupboard and lounge chair. There are two bathrooms - one on the first floor with h/w shower, washbasin & w/c and another on the second floor with a bathtub, washbasin, and w/c. Even the bathrooms capture the beautiful views.
Facilities
The second floor consists of the lounge and dining area surrounded by glass walls allowing for spectacular views across the tree tops to the Rhumassala temple and Galle harbour beyond. This area is equipped with comfortable sofas, dining table for up to 10 guests, and iPod dock. The lounge opens out to a terrace which can be used for romantic candlelit dinners. There is a small open plan kitchen at one end of the second floor that is equipped with a fridge, cooker, kettle, a few saucepans, crockery and cutlery, and BBQ grill. You can do your own cooking or order your meals from Mrs Ira next door who also is in charge of housekeeping at Silva Tree. Ira prepares traditional home cooked Sri Lankan meals as well as a few western dishes which are sent across to the guests at Silva Tree. Discuss your meal preferences with her ahead of time. She also organises laundry and also has a tuk tuk that guests can use to get about. There are several beachside cafes and restaurants nearby in Unawatuna that serves fresh seafood, Sri Lankan and western cuisine. Some even deliver right to your doorstep. For relaxing Ayurvedic massages and a host of preventive and curative Ayurvedic treatments, Silva Tree recommends the Wadugewatte spa and clinic which is only a short distance away.
Excursions
Explore the surrounding wilderness, the rural villages, and the Rhumassala Temple. With beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean a walk around the headland near the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and verdant jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on Jungle Beach, a little-known and secluded beach. Aside from a few wandering dogs and local fishing boats there is little distraction on Jungle Beach. Surfing is also ideal in Unawatuna and Mirissa where watersports include sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkeling and boating. The historic town of Galle, with its 17C Dutch Fort, is just a ten-minute drive. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, lighthouse, narrow streets, interesting restaurants and boutique hotels, Galle Fort deserves hours of exploration.
