The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
The Sun House was a forerunner of Galle’s boutique market and set impeccable standards in Sri Lanka accommodation from the outset. This stylish boutique property, situated on a quiet, leafy hill, was built in the 1860s and glows with lightness and subtle style. It overlooks the harbour of Galle, the Sri Lankan south-coast town that has become a haven for the discerning traveller. All seven rooms are fitted with cast-iron double beds, en suite bathrooms, a/c (except one) and overhead fans. As with the Dutch House, the décor cultivates a soothing environment with an emphasis here on whiteness, lightness and simplicity. This lavishly-praised boutique property has two beautiful tropical gardens; The fragrant frangipani (“temple tree”) garden leads to the swimming pool, and the mango garden has a distant view of Galle harbour.
The Sun House has seven spacious suites, each following an individual theme. Ensuite bathrooms have twin sinks and showers. Each suite is furnished with Dutch period antiques - four-poster bed with canopied mosquito netting, almairah, dressing table, and writing desk. All the suites other than the Cinnamon Suite have a/c. Books, walls adorned with photographs and paintings, fresh flowers and the finest bed linen and bath towels create a country house feel. There are three Standard Rooms, two Deluxe Rooms and two Premium Suites.
Sun and Sky Suite: This cosy double room, decorated in yellows and blues, opens out to the Mango Tree garden with distant views of Galle harbour. The blue hues even permeate the bathroom, which has twin sinks and shower.
Kingfisher Suite: Highlighted in orange and blue, the Kingfisher suite also opens out to the Mango Tree garden with views of the Galle harbour. This suite has a spacious, newly-renovated bathroom.
Parrot Fish Suite: This cosy twin room, with two antique single four-poster beds, opens out to the front verandah and garden near the main entrance. Decorated with local handloom fabrics in colours of blues, yellows and greens. The ensuite bathroom has twin sinks and shower.
Hibiscus Suite: This deluxe suite is decorated in reds and pinks and has a spacious bathroom with twin sinks and outdoor shower surrounded by tropical plants. The Hibiscus Suite opens onto the Mango Tree garden with distant harbour views.
Araliya Suite: Located through the main living room, this deluxe suite has a newly renovated bathroom with shower. It overlooks the large Frangipani Garden with swimming pool.
The Dumas Suite: Situated separately at the edge of the hill with distant ocean views, the Dumas Suite was added in 2005 and named after the American designer who once lived at The Sun House. It has a separate living and work area and a private balcony with wonderful views. Highlighted in colours of pink, purples and reds, this suite has a spacious bathroom with bathtub and shower. Private and romantic.
The Cinnamon Suite: An antique stairway leads up to this quaint and spacious Suite occupying the entire first floor of The Sun House. You enter through an impressive library with surrounding windows opening out to magnificent views of Galle. The large bedroom has a four-poster bed dressed in fine linen. The bathroom has an indoor shower and bathtub just outside on the balcony. This suite has no a/c, but the high roofs, a ceiling fan, the ocean breeze keeps the room cool.
The Sun House has a wonderful living area where guests can read, listen to music and relax with a glass of wine. It opens on one side to a verandah, garden filled with frangipani tree, and swimming pool. A formal dining room is fit for an elegant banquet. The restaurant at the Sun House is open to the public and visited by guests staying at its adjacent sister property, the Dutch House. Fusion cuisine is served with Sri Lankan, Thai, Australian and Mediterranean influences. Meals can be taken in the dining room, the verandah, or the back garden under the mango tree. Dick's Bar is an excellent cocktail bar.
The much-renowned Sun House lies directly opposite its sister property, Dutch House, on a steep, leafy street on the outskirts of Galle. About 2.5 hours from the airport via the Southern Highway or catch an air taxi to Koggala Lake. If you are heading to the hills afterwards, we offer competitive rates on a sea plane service from Koggala lake to Hatton.
