Location
The Kitulgala Resthouse, the former colonial riverside stopover now managed by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, can be reached by an 86Km drive from Colombo on the Colombo/Hatton road. The journey from Colombo takes about 2.5 hours. The small town, blessed with a beautiful location, is an ideal stopover destination on the cross roads for many travellers.
Introduction
Kitugala Resthouse boasts a magnificent location overlooking the wide Kelani River, a tributary carving its way through a southern strip of low rolling hills covered with lush vegetation. It has a colonial air and was indeed originally built for travelling colonial administrators. Kitulgala Resthouse is well located for those wishing to break the journey from the coast to the hills or from the deep south to Colombo. Adventure junkies flock for the whitewater rafting -- the best in Sri Lanka -- and movie buffs can still admire the original location for David Lean's award winning classic "Bridge on the River Kwai.

Accommodation
The 19 double bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, are relatively basic but clean and comfortable. Only four are airconditioned and the others are cooled by overhead ceiling fans -- which are quite adequate because of the cool forest air. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with h/w shower, wash basin, and w/c. Most rooms have televisions but beware that they only receive one channel! 16 rooms have mini-fridges. All rooms have room service.
Facilities
There is a lounge bar and restaurant. Like many resthouses across the island, Kitulgala Resthouse has become a popular lunchtime stop with the kitchen serving up a fine traditional rice and curry. There is no swimming pool here but it is safe to bathe in the river. Whitewater rafting and canoeing can be organised on the river -- do book in advance.
Excursions
Just across the Kelani River is a primeval forest with lush tropical flora and is home about 54 rare species of birds, including the indigenous white owl. Jungle trekking, outdoor camping, mountain biking, bird watching, and a tour of the water falls is possible from here. A two hour drive will take you to Adam's Peak, a 2,234-meter mountain that is a sacred pilgrimage site for people of many faiths. The climb is possible from December to April and most wondrous at night where the lights of the stepped mountainside rising into the heavens will stir the soul of the most adamant non-believer and where you can time your ascent to the summit in the hope of a glorious sunrise.
