Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka
Luxury hotel banner
Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits on the remote Indian Ocean coastline at the edge of Yala National Park, offering a chic wilderness experience in Sri Lanka’s most famous safari destination.

Part of Resplendent Ceylon’s prestigious portfolio, this high-quality property reimagines the concept of a tented camp, blending adventure with refined and sophisticated design. The results of a collaboration of Dutch, English, and Sri Lankan architects, the lodge takes inspiration from the natural landscape, with structures that echo the curves of coastal boulders and dunes. Its 28 cocoon-like tents, crafted from canvas and leather, offer something quite special.

The interiors, with teak floors, freestanding copper bathtubs, and safari-style furnishings, evoke the romance of an expedition camp while ensuring contemporary luxury. The open-air bamboo dining pavilion serves contemporary Sri Lankan cuisine, with fresh seafood and seasonal produce taking centre stage. Whether relaxing by the freeform infinity pool, indulging in a spa treatment inspired by the wilderness, or dining under the stars, guests can experience the raw beauty of Yala without compromising on comfort. Beyond its distinctive design, Wild Coast Tented Lodge offers expert-led game drives into Yala, where sightings of leopards, elephants, and sloth bears are fairly frequent.

What we love

    • Arguably one of the most stylish property near Yala National Park
    • We loved the sundowners on the beach after a game drive
    • Exceptional food and good service
    • High quality guiding and jeeps

The Family Cocoon has two separate rooms/tents that are not connected inside, which isn’t ideal for younger children

The main pool is right next to the restaurant, which is a shame as it doesn’t feel secluded, however many of the rooms have private pools

You are near the busier entrance to Yala National Park, though Wild Coast do everything to avoid queues getting into the park

It’s not cheap, but you get what you pay for here – it’s a special property

Rollaway or futon beds and cribs available in certain suites. Suitable for families with older children interested in wildlife and luxury camping. Its not ideal for very young children due to safety considerations.

Educational programs about local wildlife and conservation efforts are available and kids’ cookery classes managed by the lodge’s culinary team a real highlight here.

The hotel exemplifies sustainable luxury and is recognised as a global pioneer in this field. Throughout its architecturally harmonious designs, the use of sustainable materials such as bamboo, mud and reclaimed teak ensure that the buildings blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

The construction of the hotel involved training local people in transferable skills and the lodge now supports the construction of local schools to ensure community development.

Renewable energy and resource management are prioritised across the site. The lodge is establishing a leopard and climate change research station adjacent to the property aimed at contributing to wildlife conservation efforts.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is approximately 45 minutes by car, or you can find easier transfers from Colombo to the domestic airport at Weerawila, 50 minutes by car.

Yala National Park is right on the hotel’s doorstep, and you are just under an hour’s drive from the ancient Buddhist monastery of Sithulpawwa Rock Temple and Bundala National Park.

What our travellers say

We went to Sri Lanka as a three-generation family of three. The superb trip was organised by Samanthie and the team and it's difficult to see how it could have been bettered.

Red Dot organised the most wonderful 3-week holiday for us. Samanthie built a trip around the amazing sights we had requested visiting, together with her own suggestions and a wide mix of hotels, which gave us the flavours of both traditional Sri Lanka and the sleek, stylish contemporary version of the country. Our Driver made the whole experience incredibly special for us.

I can’t thank Cherylle and the Red Dot team enough for their meticulous planning of our family holiday to India travelling through Rajasthan over Christmas. As a family of all adults, every suggestion from daily activities to hotel choices was simply perfect. We travelled through Delhi, Ranthambore (an unforgettable tiger safari!), Jaipur and Agra and I truly feel we experienced the very best of each destination while moving at a relaxed, well thought out pace

My partner arranged a holiday trip at fairly short notice to Sri Lanka with Red Dot on a recommendation, Samanthie was so patient & helpful with her suggested itinerary which we followed with some minor amendments. On arrival at Colombo we met Manjula our chauffeur/guide who was absolutely brilliant!

Dulmini and the Red Dot Team arranged a fantastic trip for us around Assam and North East India. Faultless service. I cannot recommend them more highly.

We looked up, and communicated with umpteen tour operators. Though Red Dot seemed to have offices in Sri Lanka and the UK, they seemed to have the best reviews. We were fortunate enough to correspond with Cherylle, who not only assured us of the safety of our friend, but created a personalised, and flexible, itinerary which we could not have done ourselves.

A 14-day tour with Red Dot Tours was the perfect antidote to the bleak UK winter. After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we contacted Red Dot Tours and were not disappointed. Our consultant, Lahiru, curated a seamless itinerary. Throughout the planning phase, Lahiru was incredibly responsive; the final itinerary—delivered via a user-friendly 'Guest Portal'—was impressively detailed, covering every hotel stay and excursion.
