Pooja Kanda, meaning `hill of worship’ in Sinhalese, is an utterly tranquil setting on a hillock, with the beaches of the Galle Coast within easy reach. Originally the property belonged to a village headman whose house has been caringly restored by British owners. A new two-storey building has been added, in keeping with the colonial style of architecture with arched doorways, high ceilings, wide verandahs, courtyards and extensive balconies. The two buildings come together seamlessly in this wonderful villa. Interiors have Dutch period antiques, comfortable sofas and modern conveniences. The gardens are scattered with flowing plants and fruit trees that attract many monkeys and birds.
Pooja Kanda is rented as a whole and can accommodate up to 10 guests. The villa is reached via a series of steps which may pose a problem for those with mobility difficulties. Pooja Kanda is the sister property of Ambassador’s’ House in Galle Fort and Ocean’s Edge in Tangalle - all exquisite villas located along the south coast.
