Pooja Kanda, meaning `hill of worship’ in Sinhalese, is an utterly tranquil setting on a hillock, with the beaches of the Galle Coast within easy reach. Originally the property belonged to a village headman whose house has been caringly restored by British owners. A new two-storey building has been added, in keeping with the colonial style of architecture with arched doorways, high ceilings, wide verandahs, courtyards and extensive balconies. The two buildings come together seamlessly in this wonderful villa. Interiors have Dutch period antiques, comfortable sofas and modern conveniences. The gardens are scattered with flowing plants and fruit trees that attract many monkeys and birds.
Pooja Kanda is rented as a whole and can accommodate up to 10 guests. The villa is reached via a series of steps which may pose a problem for those with mobility difficulties. Pooja Kanda is the sister property of Ambassador’s’ House in Galle Fort and Ocean’s Edge in Tangalle - all exquisite villas located along the south coast.
There are five spacious bedrooms – of which two are located on the ground floor and three upstairs. All have garden views and open out to the verandah or extensive balcony that wraps around the villa. Bedrooms have a/c and overhead fans and are furnished with antique king size four-poster beds dressed in white linen and fitted with mosquito netting.
Ground Floor Rooms: The spacious Master bedroom is at the back of the house and opens out to a private verandah and rear terrace that leads to the swimming pool. This bedroom is furnished with a king size four-poster bed, wardrobe, writing desk and sofa. The ensuite bathroom has twin vanities, bathtub and shower. The adjacent second bedroom has a queen size four-poster bed and ensuite bathroom with h/w shower.
Upper Floor Rooms: Three more bedrooms are located upstairs and are accessed via a winding staircase. These bedrooms open out to the wide balcony that skirts around and has wonderful garden views right around. Interiors are furnished with four-poster beds and built in cupboard space. Ensuite bathrooms have twin vanities, bidets and h/w showers.
The living room opens on to an expansive verandah. The dining room has seating for eight. Meals are also served in the verandah or at the rear terrace by the swimming pool. There is also a TV lounge with a 42 inch flat screen TV, DVD player and board games. wifi, telephone, iPod dock, stereo with CD player, library and swimming pool which is located in a quiet corner at the back of the house surrounded with greenery. Guests can cook in a well-equipped kitchen or rely on the in-house cook, who can prepare traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and can also whip up some western dishes and snacks. Breakfast is included in the price; other meals are at cost. The cook will happily shop for groceries. BYO alcohol. Pooja Kanda has a manager, cook and housekeeper. A babysitter can be arranged with prior notice. A trained masseuse is available upon request.
Pooja Kanda is a wonderful five-bedroom villa in a village setting 10 minutes inland from the Galle Coast village of Koggala – and about 25 minutes from Galle Fort. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately 2.5 hours or take the Air Taxi and fly into Koggala.
