Mango House is a laid-back guesthouse with eclectic interiors and an informal feel. This 200-year old property was originally a Cinnamon warehouse that has been brought to life with vibrant interiors mixed with colonial charm. Architectural features of high timber roofs, clay tiled floors and roof, arched doorways and a broad verandah gives this a feel of an old colonial villa. The bright and airy interiors are highlighted with beautiful purple lotuses and colourful soft furnishings in pink, purple and lime green. Glistening saris cascade along the walls while movie posters from Bollywood add glamour to the exotic living room. Spend your evenings relaxing on a day bed under a Mango tree in the front gardens. If you’re lucky, you may even spot the occasional monkey hovering about on the tree tops. The six well furnished bedrooms are located on the ground and upper floor with views across the clay tiled roofs of Galle Fort. Mango House follows a strict environmental friendly outlook with the use of solar energy to power hot water; recycling of waste; and contributes towards local environmental conservation initiatives. Mango House can be booked by the room or as a whole villa and can accommodate up to 14 guests. Rates include a Continental or English breakfast. Families with children are welcome.
There are seven rooms of which three are located on the ground floor and four are on the upper floor. All rooms open on to a courtyard or balcony except for one bedroom which has no outdoor access. Rooms are furnished with queen-size four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting; wardrobe, and writing desk. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, satellite TV, DVD player (DVDs can be borrowed from the in-house DVD library), complimentary wifi internet, and electronic safe. Ensuite bathrooms with h/w rain showers.
Courtyard Rooms: These two ground floor rooms open out to private courtyard where guests can have their breakfast or relax with a good book.
Balcony Rooms: Situated on the upper floor, these three rooms open out to private balconies with views across clay tiled roofs of Galle Fort.
Family Room: This room is designed with a mezzanine floor where two children can sleep comfortably. The ground level of this room is furnished with a queen-size bed and the mezzanine floor has a queen-size mattress on the floor for children. The Family Room is equipped with a/c and a wall fan and all other standard facilities.
Mango House only serves breakfast (Continental or English breakfast). There are several restaurants and cafes that will deliver food and the guesthouse staff will be happy to serve it in the ground floor dining area or in the privacy of your own courtyard or balcony. Other facilities include an upstairs lounge, complementary wifi internet throughout the property; DVD library, and a fully equipped kitchen. For those wanting to explore beyond Galle Fort, there are plenty of tuk-tuks available nearby.
Mango House is a stylish seven-bedroom guesthouse set in a refurbished Dutch-period building on Leyn Barn Cross Street in the heart of Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort and close to the beaches of the Galle coast. Galle is about two hours south from Colombo’s international airport travelling on the Southern highway. If you are then heading into the hills, we offer competitive rates on a sea plane service between Koggala and Hatton.
