Location:
Fort House is located in the heart of Galle’s historic
17th century Dutch Fort. The journey from Colombo’s International
Airport averages four-and-quarter hours ours - or take the Air
Taxi and fly to Koggala, which is a 20-minutes drive to Galle
Fort.
Description: Built in the early 1800s this
family home, originally occupied by a merchant and his wife,
has recently undergone a complete transformation courtesy of
its Hong Kong-based owners. Many of the original features have
been restored and, when combined with an eclectic mix of modern
and traditional features, the overall feel is of a comfortable
family retreat. A cool green-sided pool in the courtyard provides
the focal point to this stylish house whilst the west facing
roof terrace offers a magnificent view over the Dutch ramparts.
Accommodation: The villa has three doubles and one
twin all with a/c and overhead fans. The master bedroom has
an ensuite bathroom with shower. The double with twin beds share
a bathroom with shower that separates the beds. The other double
can access this bathroom as well or use the additional guest
bathroom located on the ground floor.
Facilities: A study/reading area is located
in the entrance hall. Large and comfortable sofas are located
in the main living area that opens onto the dining area. In
addition to around the courtyard pool there are deep chairs
on the roof terraces and on that rare 'rainy afternoon' there
is the Satellite TV/ DVD room with huge beanbags. Whilst breakfast
can be taken on the roof terrace a fabulous locally made teak
table can be set for up to 12 for more formal dining. Surrounded
by plants, the small cool pool provides a perfect place to float
around during the day or upon returning from a day of sun on
the beach. The staff includes a live-in houseboy and a room
girl who comes daily to clean and wash clothes. The houseboy
is a keen learner who will prepare breakfast but otherwise you
have to take the lead in the modern and fully equipped kitchen.
Subject to availability and an extra charge a cook can be provided.
Excursions: Galle Fort is like nowhere else
in Sri Lanka. Enter through the 'new' English gate or the 'old'
Dutch gate and enter a different country. The renovated Dutch
architecture of shops, hotels and private houses is a dominant
feature the narrow streets. Largely built by the Dutch during
the 18th Century the Fort is another of Sri Lanka's World Heritage
sites. The Ramparts provide an excellent vantage point to capture
the atmosphere of an international test match. Sunbathing beaches
of the Galle coast are a short tuk-tuk drive away.
