Built with sensitivity to the natural environment as part of a mission to rewild this piece of land, this is a place to feel connected to nature and enjoy the sound of birdsong from your tent. Each of the eight guest tents are air-conditioned, with an ensuite bathroom with powerful showers, twin basins and hanging space for your clothes.
To the front of each tent is a porch with cane chairs and loungers where you can stargaze at night. At the heart of the camp is a spring-fed lake frequented by kingfishers, heron and egrets. One of the most popular spots in camp is the deck which sits over the water, a perfect spot for breakfast or yoga. The Camp House is where meals are served, along with a lounge, bar and library area. The team is what makes Shergagh really shine – the owners Katie and Jehan spend much of the year here with their children, whilst manager Catherine and head naturalist Rajan and his daughter Aasia lead the safari activities.
What we love
- The focus here is on being in and connecting nature, rather than staying in a luxury lodge
- A true rewilding success story over the past 20 years
- Air-conditioning helps keep tents cool in the hotter months
- Mix up game drives to explore the wildlife-rich Kanha reserve with forest walks and cycling
- Take a dip in the spring-fed lake at the centre of camp on a hot day
- The community activities are well worth it, meeting local artists and learning about local life
Kanha gets cold from December to January and while heaters and hot water bottles are provided, you’ll likely need to bring warm layers to ensure a comfortable stay
You’ll spend a lot of time in the forests here so we recommend packing insect repellant
Meals are served family style and shared with other guests - which we love - but may not be suited to everyone
There isn’t a pool but you can swim in the natural, spring-fed water reserve at the centre of the property
Safari permits are limited so it is important to book these well in advance
The reserve is closed on Wednesday afternoons (this is true of all reserves in Madhya Pradesh)
Families are welcome at Shergarh and there are two family tents, each with more space, extra beds, a generous ensuite bathroom and a private veranda. Kids will love the activities on offer, from safaris in the tiger reserve to swimming in the lake and even paddling on the homemade raft.
The owners, Jehan and Katie, have been working hard to re-wild the land since they bought it and over the years they’ve made amazing progress. They removed a lot of the invasive eucalyptus that had taken over and the local wildlife has started to return to the property, including boar, jackals, jungle cats, and even the occasional tiger.
Immersed in jungle and surrounding a spring-fed lake, Shergarh Tented Camp is located in Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, India’s central province. Raipur Airport is a 4-hour drive.
