Set right on the banks of the Kabini River in Karnataka, the camp has the distinctive atmosphere of indulgent safari adventure about it and is ideally located, not only to head out on safari trips, but also to spot wildlife from the camp itself. If talking ‘tent’ makes you think of scout camps, think again; this is serious luxury. Hand carved teak furniture, carefully curated artisanal artefacts, stone showers under the jungle sky, jacuzzi baths and air-conditioning all feature in every room.
The décor is a blend of neutral linens and gentle jungle-inspired patterns and colours. Choose between 16 luxury tents, either overlooking the Kabini, nestled in the forest, or as a machan suite elevated above the ground to give a leopard’s eye view of camp. The camp team is full of wildlife experts, who’ll go out of their way to make your trip memorable. Combine this with the activities on offer, from bush dinners to sun downers, night walks to coracle rides and this should be a safari stay to remember forever.
What we love
- We love the waterfront luxury tents whose private verandas overlook the Kabini backwaters, the perfect viewpoint to spot elephants coming for an evening drink.
- Safari options from here include both vehicular or boat options and both take advantage of the region’s claim to hold the highest density of Asiatic wildlife in India.
- The bush dinners, served around a roaring camp fire, are the perfect end to a day on safari.
Whilst this is a luxurious camp, it does involve staying in tents and spending a lot of time in the natural world. Be prepared to bring an extra layer for warmth and expect insect life to be hovering around the camp, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Food is served every night around the camp fire and is prepared by the onsite chef, you’ll be treated to a range of delicious local dishes but won’t have limitless menu choices
Children are welcome at the camp and several of the tents can accommodate extra beds or cots. Children under the age of five are not able to go on the vehicular safaris but they can enjoy the boat trips on the Kabini River.
Sustainability and low-environment impact tourism is at the heart of The Bison from its eco-friendly tents to the water and waste management of the camp. Food for the camp is sourced from local, organic farms to support regional businesses and reduce the kitchen’s carbon footprint. The camp organises eco-friendly wildlife safaris that are built around creating minimal disruption to the local ecosystem whilst educating visitors about the wildlife and conservation efforts.
Right on the meeting point between Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagahole National Park, the camp is the closest to the entrance gates, so perfectly situated for early morning and evening safari drives. The camp is 90 km (a two-hour drive) from either Mysuru domestic airport or train station.
