The soaring gopurams of Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple are a feast for the eyes; a colourful explosion of carvings that depict Hindu gods and goddesses in brilliant hues and intricate detail.
Inside is equally vibrant, the smoke of the incense mingling with the intense fragrance of jasmine and throngs of worshippers. While the 12 gopurams of this 17th century temple are the main draw, Madurai’s bustling streets, markets and Gandhi Museum make it a fascinating place to spend a couple of days, dipping in and out of silk shops, sampling South Indian dosas, and soaking in the colour of this ancient city.
