Periyar
Tucked away in the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats, Periyar National Park is a biodiverse paradise of tropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests, montane grasslands, savannahs and rivers that provide a haven for tigers, elephants, sambar, and King Cobra.
It hosts a colourful display of birdlife, including Malabar grey hornbill, blue-winged parakeet, Nilgiri flycatcher, and crimson-backed sunbird, that can be spotted on foot with a local ranger or by boat. Neighbouring Thekkady is also a key spice trade town and a walk through a spice plantation is a fragrant introduction to the production of vanilla, cinnamon, pepper and more.
