Kargil
Pleated hills, snow-dusted peaks and high mountain passes characterise the landscapes around Kargil, the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh.
Once a stop on the Silk Route, Kargil’s name means ‘a place between kingdoms’ and nods to its confluence of Tibetan, Muslim and Buddhist influences.
From the 11th century Stongdey Monastery to the Mulbekh Monastery, the region is home to serene escapes, though the Kargil War Monument is a reminder of the region’s more tumultuous past. Trekking, mountaineering and gentle strolls through mulberry and apricot orchards invite you to escape the outside world and become completely immersed in mountain life.
