Leh
Set at a dizzying altitude of 3,500 metres, Leh, the capital of Ladakh, is a charming spot in which to acclimatise to the altitude for a few days.
Surrounded by rugged mountains, you’d be forgiven for having your attention stolen by the views but the town itself is equally enticing, with ancient monasteries, including the famous Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa, offering an insight into the cultural lives of the people of this far flung town.
Aside from the religious and historic offerings of Leh itself, it’s also the perfect base for exploring the nearby Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri.
