Set on the edge of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer is a dusty yet regal spot that’s earned the moniker, ‘the Golden City’.
Its sandstone houses rise from the desert in a mirage-like shimmer, watched over by the crumbling walls of the historic Jaisalmer Fort. Dating back to 1156, the fort is home to around a quarter of the city’s residents and meandering through its narrow lanes is a chance to discover the contrast of ornately carved doorways and painted havelis that sit alongside the more modern vestiges of its residents. At dusk, head out of the city to soak in the star-studded desert skies on a camel ride.
