Inspiration
Built in the 18th century, this elegant, pale-yellow Indian palace was constructed during the later period of Bundela rule as a prominent royal seat within Orchha, the historic capital of the Bundela Rajput dynasty.
It is a stunning example of the era’s architecture, with fortified walls crowning ornate arched arcades that lead tantalisingly onto manicured formal gardens. Overlooking both the River Betwa and the Orchha Fort Complex, the hotel boasts a prime central position in this historic town, with the cultural and architectural highlights of the Bundela kingdom literally on your doorstep.
The 46 guest rooms offer serene grandeur, dark wood furniture is draped in richly patterned fabrics and the pale walls are tipped with ornately painted cornicing. Many of the rooms offer views out across the Fort Complex. The regal dining room serves meals that are designed to transport you to the era of kings, offering specialist Bundelkhandi dishes prepared from hand-picked ingredients grown in their organic garden; while broader Indian, Asian and international options are also on offer. Outside, the large pool sits in the hotel’s courtyard, overlooking the surrounding countryside and nearby temples. Alongside this you’ll find the spa, which offers Keralan Ayurvedic treatments together with yoga and mediation sessions.
What we love
- The hotel’s location envelops you in the rich history of Orchha. It’s an easy stroll to the Orchha Fort Complex which spans a breathtaking collection of Bundela Architecture, including the exquisite towers of the Jahangir Mahal, the imposing ruin of the Raj Mahal royal palace and the lush serenity of the Rai Praveen Mahal gardens
- Visit the nearby Saket Museum for an insight into the artistic history of India; the museum is the first of its kind in the country, displaying the traditional art of tribal communities alongside intricate Hindu works of art
- We love the hotel’s attitude to its food provision; experience this first hand on a trip to their organic farm, learning about the natural farming methods they have implemented
Don’t expect high speed Wi-Fi access across the whole site, this ancient complex is built of thick stone walls designed to aid Rajput privacy rather than digital accesshe property offers family suites, and plenty of organised activities including river rafting, bird watching and cyclingThe hotel focuses on farm-to-fork cuisine, sourcing most of its ingredients from its own organic farm. Community engagement is encouraged by the hotel which offers visits to local villages and farms to help boost education about the regionA five minute walk from the Orchha Fort complex, Rama Raja Temple and Chaturbhuj Temple. 0.2km from the ornate Orchha Cenotaphs, memorial monuments built in honour of Bundela rulers that offer unbeatable sunrise and sunset views over the Betwa River. 2.5 hours from Gwalior Airport by car, and half an hour from Jhansi Junction train stationWhat our travellers say
