Inspiration
A restored 1920s townhouse in the centre of the Bengali area of Calcutta, the Calcutta Bungalow Bed & Breakfast offers six guest rooms, all beautifully curated by a well-known local designer.
Each of the rooms portrays an area of the city, reflected through its sophisticated colour palette and locally sourced vintage furnishings, with every piece telling a story and adding to the unique personality of the room. The overall atmosphere is one of understated luxury, allowing ultimate comfort whilst celebrating a sense of place. The artistic beauty of the hotel is evident from every angle with the stunning feature walls of original brickwork carrying throughout the property and onto the exquisite rooftop terrace, which provides a serene break from the bustle of the big city.
Sustainably sourced and delicious, the restaurant at Calcutta Bungalow offers a traditional Bengali breakfast, alongside continental options. The owner himself is passionate about preserving the cultural heritage of Calcutta and offers guests immersive walking tours of the ancient city and can recommend nearby eateries for lunch and dinner.
What we love
- The rooms of the hotel truly are one of a kind and are worthy of spending time in, perhaps reading a book from the hotel’s own vast private collection
- The central location provides the perfect starting point for a local street food tour. Your hosts can provide ample suggestions for spots to try, or just step out of the door and let yourself get drawn in by the tantalising smells among the bustling food markets
As the hotel is situated in the heart of a bustling neighbourhood, the surrounding streets can be noisy and congested. However, we enjoyed being deep in the ‘real’ Calcutta and the hotel itself remains a calm sanctuary
The hotel does not have an elevator, so guests with mobility issues will need to ensure that they request rooms on the first floor
Extra beds are available in the rooms upon request, although no infant cribs. The hotel offers a wide range of activities for the whole family to enjoy
The hotel prides itself on its sustainable ethos, promoting tourism with its roots in community development. The decision to faithfully restore the hotel building echoes this commitment; the owner is passionate about restoring the historical heart of Calcutta without the need for demolition.
The meals at the restaurant are all produced from ingredients sourced in the vibrant local markets, promoting local business and ensuring fresh, seasonal produce
Calcutta Bungalow is found on Radha Kanta Jew Street in the heart of Kolkata, a 3-minute walk from leafy Deshbandhu Park and a 30-minute drive from the airport.
