Inspiration
Buried in the heart of Satpura National Park, Denwa Backwater Escape is a stunning, secluded safari lodge with a focus on sustainable tourism.
Whether on safari by jeep through the grasslands, or by boat along the Denwa, the lodge’s expert naturalists will help you sight anything from big cats to flying squirrels, chameleons to crocodiles. The lodge’s eight cottages and two treehouses are modern, without taking you away from the wilderness, as local artworks replace the distraction of TVs and the river flows in view of your veranda. Dine on classics under a starry sky, like smokey Thalis, paneers, or the catch of the day.
What we love
- An amazing opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to see birds, big cats, and plenty of other exotic species
- A private and tranquil lodge, far-flung from the furore of India’s bustling cities
- Stay in your own private cottage or treehouse, rest in air-conditioned rooms adorned with local arts and crafts, and admire vistas of the river from your windows
- Sip Mahua cocktails by the Denwa and enjoy freshly cooked regional Thali dishes in hand-crafted pottery, or the catch of the day from the river
- Take a canoe out along the river or enjoy a river safari cruise, and see the aquatic wildlife like soft-shelled turtles, herons and terns
Even with air con, the tree houses can get very hot in the summer months, so consider the cottages if you prefer cooler dwellings
While there is no spa on site, you can still unwind in the pool, in the shade of the surrounding trees
Rooms do not have TVs or room service but do come with air conditioning, WiFi, and stunning views of the Denwa River
Families are welcome, but amenities are not specifically designed with families in mind
The lodge’s mission is to conserve, protect and re-wild the surrounding forests. There are no single-use plastics on site, and the lodge uses local and sustainable materials and recycles old furniture in the guest rooms.
The kitchen use no preservatives in their food and minimal packaging, and all food is locally sourced. The majority of all staff are hired from local villages, and the hotel prioritises educating the local people on protecting and conserving the ecosystem
Set within the densely forested Satpura National Park, on the banks of the Denwa River and next to the idyllic Tawa Reservoir. Its remote location means you’re a 40-minute drive from the nearest town of Sohagpur and a 6-hour drive from Jabalpur International Airport.
