Inspiration
The Flame of the Forest is one of Kanha National Park’s most comfortable safari lodges, valuing warmth and hospitality as much as it values the natural world.
The owners and their family in the community planted the trees and laid the bricks that would become this lodge, and every night, once you’ve explored the park with their knowledgeable guides, you can hear their stories by the campfire. Each private cottage has an outdoor shower and daybed, a romantic spot where you can birdwatch and let time pass. Meals are prepared with locally sourced ingredients, and you can dine by candlelight under the stars.
What we love
- An opportunity to explore one of India’s national parks with experienced, knowledgeable guides
- Take an exclusive safari tour with an esteemed wildlife documentary filmmaker, and learn his tricks of the trade
- Relax in your own private cottage, with outdoor day beds that look over the river
- Meditate and wake up your body with the lodge’s yoga sessions
- Take guided walks through local villages and get a real sense of India’s rural communities
- Unwind by the campfire as the hotel staff tell stories from the park’s history
While you are not guaranteed to see tigers on safari, the park is full of exotic wildlife that you are bound to see on your explorations
The water heaters are wood-fired and only heated once in the afternoon, so keep in mind if thinking of having an early-morning shower
The tents can be cold in the winter months due to their heating system, and no heaters in the room, but extra bedding and hot water bottles can be provided
Families are welcome, but amenities are not specifically designed with families in mind
The lodge has contributed to a number of initiatives to aid the community, from providing warm clothes and school uniforms for children, to supporting a medical camp in certain villages. Meals are prepared using locally sourced ingredients
Close to the main entrance of Kanha National Park, surrounded by mixed forest and a short distance from the Banjar River. It’s a 40-minute drive from Bamhani and a 3-hour 30-minute drive from Jabalpur International Airport
