Inspiration
Set in 17 acres of lush gardens, Heritage Madurai started life as a textile mill and then a clubhouse, carefully redesigned in the 70s by renowned Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa.
Bringing honey-coloured stone from the surrounding countryside to complement the original features, much of his design reflects the heritage of Madurai. The 72 rooms and villas are simple but comfortable and spacious - the villas come with a plunge pool if you’re looking for privacy.
Otherwise, unwind by the hotel pool, designed in homage to one of the local temple’s pools. There is also a spa, gym, restaurant, cafe and bar.
What we love
- A heritage property in a peaceful neighbourhood on the outskirts of Madurai It’s set in 17 acres of lush gardens that offer a welcome respite from the busy city
- Perfectly placed for exploring Madurai’s many spectacular temples
- The Swig & Tee Bar will instantly transport you back to the days of the British Raj
- Dine on delicious contemporary Indian cuisine at the Banyan Restaurant
- All of the rooms are spacious but the villas are especially large and enjoy their own private plunge pool
There are very few loungers right by the pool - get there early if you want to reserve a spot
It’s simple and some of the rooms need a little TLC but it’s perfectly comfortable and one of the best options in Madurai
The rooms and facilities are spread across the spacious grounds but golf carts are available to whisk you from A to B
Families are welcome, but amenities are not designed with families in mind.
Located on Melakkal Road in Kochadai, a leafy neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city of Madurai. It’s 6km from highlights like the Sri Meenakshi Temple.
