Inspiration
A 200-year-old haveli infused with family history, Ranjit’s Svaasa provides an experience that is authentically Indian.
Located down a private road just outside the bustling centre of Amritsar, the Mehra Family describe their haveli as a ‘non-hotel’ and offer a proud and warm welcome to their inherited heirloom, which dates to the early 19th century reign of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The haveli encompasses 18 rooms, each with a uniquely rich colour scheme and character, finished with a myriad of photographs and art reflective of its historic heart.
The rooms open out onto private terraces or directly into the magical courtyard, full of luscious green plant-life, which strikes a perfect contrast to the deep red walls of the building. Food is served by candlelight in Herbs Café and is based on regional farm-to-fork cuisine with a focus on sustainability. The menu changes daily, dependant on the availability of local ingredients, with most of the recipes featuring unique, home-ground spice blends. The haveli also boasts an ayurvedic spa using home blended oils.
What we love
- The haveli boasts its own ‘time corridor’ and the hosts offer to walk this with guests, taking them along a photographic timeline of seven generations of the family’s rich history
- The spa here is unique and wonderful, sitting in the historic cowshed and horse-stables of the property, its ancient ayurvedic treatments feature home-blended aroma oils and bespoke massages
- Their focus on regional cuisine is fabulous. The hotel offers both an Amritsar food tour to sample authentic local delicacies and a cooking class with the haveli’s chef, where you’ll conjure up an authentic 3-course Punjabi meal
Whilst the haveli is not directly in the centre of Amritsar, it is only a short drive to the main attractions, and its location provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city
Families are easily accommodated in the haveli with the biggest suites spanning 700 square feet and featuring 2 king sized beds. The property also contains a Green Room with a TV and board games for families.
Ranjit Svaasa places a focus on training local people to give them transferrable skills for a successful career in hospitality. They recruit directly from NGO’s with a focus on training teenagers from remote rural villages. The food provided in the haveli is all locally sourced and focuses on seasonal produce, farmed organically Svaasa offers village tours and visits to local farms, to immerse guests in the culture and support the local economy.
The infamous Golden Temple of Amritsar is 2.5km from the property, alongside other popular sites such as Jallianwala Bagh gardens and the Partition Museum. Amritsar international airport is 13km away, and the railway station is only 2.5km from the haveli. Accommodation
