Inspiration
As its name suggests, Spice Village feels like an authentic village in the highlands of Thekkady, surrounded by cardamom and pepper plantations.
This rustic yet charming property has a community feel and many of the materials used in the construction, from the thatched roofs to the furniture inside, are locally sourced and upcycled.
The ingredients served in the three restaurants are also from the local area and there’s even one named 50 Mile, where every morsel comes from within a 50-mile radius. Facilities include a swimming pool, small spa, and a bar with a billiards table to keep you entertained.
What we love
- A rustic but charming property surrounded by cardamom and pepper plantations
- It’s modelled on the dwellings of the native Manan tribe of this region and blends in beautifully to its surroundings
- A strong focus on sustainability and community - we love the upcycled crates that have been converted into chairs
- The 50 Mile restaurant only serves food found within a 50-mile radius
- Admire the exhibitions in the Tiger Club Interpretation Center, all about the local wildlife
There’s no air conditioning but rooms are designed to be airy and the highlands are naturally a little cooler than Kerala’s lowland regions
The WiFi can be a little patchy so we encourage you to switch off and enjoy the nature that surrounds you
Rooms are a little dark but we doubt you’ll spend much time there during the day
Families are welcome but amenities haven’t been designed with families in mind. However, children will enjoy the activities in the tiger reserve and there are tennis courts, badminton courts, and a swimming pool to keep kids entertained.
Spice Village is a CGH Earth hotel, all of which are lauded for their eco and community credentials. Spice Village is no exception, with a deep integration into the local community and many of the staff from the surrounding villages. All materials were locally sourced and much of the furniture is recycled, 75% of the electricity is solar powered, and many of the ingredients used in the restaurant are grown in the organic gardens. They are also working hard to reduce plastic waste and their carbon footprint.
Located on Kumily Road in the highlands of Thekkady, a short distance from Periyar Tiger Reserve.
