Inspiration
A small heritage hotel which offers an ideal base for exploring this spectacular area of the Himalayas.
The name Nor-Khill translates as “House of Jewels”, inspired by the beauty of the landscapes, flora and fauna, which have attracted artists over the decades. Steeped in history, the property was built by the King of Sikkhim in the 1930s, and acquired in the 1970s by the Oberoi family to transform it into a hotel, the Nor-Khill has hosted many memorable guests including the Dalai Lama, members of royalty, Michael Palin, Richard Gere and Sting.
The architecture is typical of the Sikkhim region and the gardens are beautifully kept. There are 25 guest rooms, all of which enjoy splendid views of the gardens or mountains. Each has Burma teak floors, heaters, flat screen TVs, WiFi and well-appointed ensuite bathrooms. The suites have the addition of a bathtub as well as sitting area. There is a spa offering a range of Ayurvedic, Swedish and aromatherapy treatments. Meals are served in the grand Orchid dining room, with a range of European and Asian set menus on offer. During the day, snacks are also available at the Gazebo in the gardens.
What we love
- Centrally located in Gangtok, surrounded by the mighty Himalayas
- Stunning views of Kanchenjunga, the third tallest mountain in the world
- Rich in history, the hotel dates back to the 1930s
- Décor reflects the history of the property, with Sikkimese artwork and traditional furnishings
- Set your alarm early to enjoy the sunrise – it’s spectacular
There are no elevators in the property, only staircases
Located at 6000 feet above sea level (1828m), you are unlikely to feel altitude sickness but may notice shortness of breath
Families are welcome here with children of all ages.
The hotel is within easy reach of Gangtok town and there are plenty of walks and treks to enjoy in the region, exploring the majestic Himalayas as well as the abundant tea plantations
