Inspiration
The Grand Dragon rests in the crib of the Himalayas, a calm sanctuary of modern luxury surrounded by mountains, and the region’s only certified five-star hotel.
Its 76 stylish rooms are bright, spacious and well-warmed with under-floor heating. Dine in elegance at Zasgyath with panoramas of snow-capped mountains and feast on a menu of Ladakhi, Pan-Asian and European cuisines. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast or indulge in freshly baked treats at their afternoon tea lounge, or keep toasty with a barbecue. Venture to the town market, ancient monasteries on mountain summits, or the calm waters of Pangong Tso Alpine Lake.
What we love
- Rooms are bright and spacious, offering incredible views
- Their delicious and varied menus blend cuisine from across the world, from Himalayan apricot tarts to familiar European comfort foods
- An ideal base in the mountains from which to explore the sights, like ancient monasteries like Hemis or Alchi, or Nubra Valley
- With a gym and a spa on site, which provides Himalayan and Tibetan therapies, you can stay healthy and invigorated
There is no pool, but we think the spa and wellness centre more than make up for it
Difficult to get to, as you will have to take a domestic flight to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, but we believe it’s worth it to reach the roof of the world
There are fewer activities available than you may find at other five-star resorts, but with the spa, gym and games room on site, plus the Himalayas on your doorstep, you’re bound to keep busy
Families are welcome but amenities are not designed with families in mind.
The hotel maintains energy efficient operations, having installed double glazed windows, heat pumps for their hot water, and LED lighting. Their water is filtered and kitchen waste recycled. Their farm-to-fork use of ingredients like buckwheat and yak cheese relies on the local economy, and they have an onsite EV charging station for election vehicles/p>
Located on Old Leh Road, a two-minute drive from the centre of Leh in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, and just a five-minute drive from Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport.
