Inspiration
Tucked away in the Nubra Valley on the ancient Silk Route, The Kyagar is a comfortable and authentic mountain retreat.
Your hosts, Rinchen and Stanzin, have both run hotels since Ladakh opened up to tourism, and their families’ long histories in the region help infuse every stay with fascinating tales of adventure and a love for the community.
Explore the Nubra Valley and the Karakoram range beyond, waltzing past Siberian elms and buckthorn bushes, while keeping your eyes peeled for hawks and eagles. Retire to the hotel for stargazing, bonfires, movie nights, and delicious food, prepared from local ingredients.
What we love
- A family-owned property with a sense of community pride - the owners were some of the earliest settlers in this region
- Located in the Nubra Valley on the ancient Silk Road
- Spectacular views of the Karakoram mountain range
- The 16 rooms are all decorated with clay walls and woven rugs, all sourced from nearby villages
- The region displays an incredible array of biodiversity that’ll delight even the most well-travelled guests. Hawks, eagles, cape hares, and Eurasian lynx are commonly sighted
- A keen focus on sustainability and community
- Perfectly placed for exploring Ladakh, the Karakoram mountains, and the surrounding villages
The rooms are quite spread out but there is a golf cart available to whisk you from A to B It can get cold in the mountains so come prepared - the rooms are all heated but you may need layers to travel from your room to the main lodge It’s remote but we think it’s worth the effort to get here for a unique experience
Families are welcome but amenities are not designed with families in mind and there are no specific childcare or children’s activities available. Rooms can accommodate up to three adults and additional beds can be added for an extra charge.
The owners are working hard to eliminate The Kyaga’s carbon footprint and make it entirely self-sustaining. All food is locally sourced and it’s 100% solar-powered.
Located in the village of Tegar in Jammu and Kashmir’s mountainous Nubra Valley. It’s a 4-hour drive from Leh and the nearest airport.
