Inspiration
Hibiscus Garden is a charming guesthouse set within expansive tropical gardens in Tissamaharama, close to Yala, deep in Sri Lanka’s south.
It is a good base for exploring both Yala National Park and Bundala Bird Sanctuary. Its 20 ensuite rooms surround a central swimming pool, backed by verdant jungle, offering a peaceful retreat. The main building features a relaxed lounge area on the ground floor and an open-sided restaurant upstairs with views across lush paddy fields.
A portion of the gardens has been left wild, attracting a variety of bird species and dragonflies. For nature enthusiasts, the guesthouse arranges guided birdwatching trails led by a local specialist. The 20 ensuite bedrooms are set within five separate chalets, each opening onto a private veranda with garden views. Spacious and simply furnished, the rooms feature double beds, air conditioning, overhead fans, and a mini bar.
What we love
- Local and authentic food gives a flavour of the south
- The bird watching and nature photography tours with the hotel’s naturalist team are a highlight of a visit here
- This is a good budget option for a visit to southern Sri Lanka
- The hotel is close to Yala’s Kataragama Gate, which is one of the quieter entrances into the national park
This is a simple rather than luxurious hotel, but we love its charm and comfort
Families are warmly welcomed here with spacious family rooms on offer. The open garden spaces and outdoor pool provide ample room for children to play.
Hibiscus Garden is tucked away from the main tourist trail, yet close enough to experience Tissa’s ancient heritage. The jungle shrine of Kataragama is about 30 minutes away, and Yala National Park (via Kataragama Gate) about 20 minutes’ drive.
