Inspiration
Uga Jungle Beach, located on Sri Lanka’s east coast, is a brilliant blend of ocean and jungle experiences.
The resort’s 48 spacious cabins are designed to honour the island’s heritage through the use of indigenous materials while offering modern comforts; the property has an almost Robinson Crusoe feel. The cabins are thoughtfully positioned within the jungle, ensuring privacy and immersion in nature. Each room features floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing guests to enjoy views of the surrounding jungle and lagoon.
The interiors combine rustic charm with luxury, including open-air rain showers, private terraces, and plunge pools. The restaurant, nestled in the heart of the jungle, offers an immersive dining experience, where guests can feel as though they are dining in a treetop sanctuary. For those interested in outdoor activities, the Indian Ocean provides ample opportunities for whale watching, snorkelling, and sea fishing, while the resort’s gym and spa offer relaxation for those preferring dry land. Guests can also explore local cultural and historical sites, such as Lover’s Leap and the Temple of a Thousand Pillars.
What we love
- Cabins are bright and roomy, with warm, chic interiors and high ceilings
- Brilliant between April and September; the weather here is in contrast to most of the island
- A perfect location for swimming, snorkelling, sea fishing and whale watching
- The hotel is committed to sustainable tourism, reducing waste, investing into community initiatives, and using energy and water efficiently
- Visit the many local attractions from Fort Frederick and Lover’s Leap to the Kanniya hot springs
- Dine in the restaurant under the jungle canopy, or down on the beach under the stars with a romantic meal for two with your own chef and waiter
It’s quite a distance from Colombo airport, at nearly six hours by road, but it’s worth it for these ocean views. It more easily combines with The Cultural Triangle
If you love seafood, note that the barbecue experience is not included in the half-board rate but is well worth the upgrade
Unlike other beach resorts, there are no views of the beach from most of the cabins - but you’ll still be treated to views of the gorgeous trees and flora
Families are very welcome at Jungle Beach; we feel this is a great coastline for children.
Uga Hotels have strict environmental policies and are huge supporters of local projects across Sri Lanka.
Jungle Beach is an upmarket eco-retreat set on 10 acres of shrub jungle flanked by turquoise seas in the remote village of Kuchchaveli in the north-east, 30km north of Trincomalee.
