Inspiration
Rock Villa is a charming 180-year-old Sri Lankan wallawwa or ancestral home, renowned for its rich history and exceptional reputation.
Nestled within a two-acre coconut grove, the villa is located just behind the sun-kissed beaches of Bentota on the southwestern coast, which are safe for swimming from December to April. Set back from the ocean, Rock Villa is shielded by a 60-meter stretch of lush mangroves, fangipani and coconut palms, ensuring maximum privacy. The villa is owned by Nayantara Fonseka, a celebrated Sri Lankan lifestyle designer known for creating exquisite dream destinations across the island.
The original wallawwa has been thoughtfully refurbished, preserving its classic architectural features, including courtyards, a veranda, and intricate hand-carved timber window frames. The interiors strike a harmonious balance between traditional charm and contemporary style, with a relaxed, informal ambience. Dutch-period antiques, plush sofas, and colourful soft furnishings complement modern art, sculptures, fresh lotus flowers, and ethnic accents, creating a stylish and inviting atmosphere. The main wallawwa comprises two beautifully appointed bedrooms, along with a spacious living and dining area that opens directly onto the gardens.
Adjacent to this is a newly constructed set of rooms, complete with a lounge, which blends seamlessly with the villa’s original architecture. A large dining pavilion overlooks the inviting swimming pool, and the stunning beach is just a few steps away at the bottom of the garden, accessible across a simple, single-gauge railway line. The occassional passing train is a curiosity rather than a disturbance, though young children should be supervised when crossing the line. Rooms can either be booked individually or Rock Villa is available to be booked as a whole for private bookings, with a minimum stay of two nights. The villa can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests.
What we love
- A beautifully restored colonial villa offering an exclusive and luxurious experience
- Exquisite dining experiences focus on local cuisine, delighting food lovers
- We love the art on display here, curated from celebrate local artists
Limited number of rooms means early booking is necessary
The focus here is on natural relaxation so rooms do not have televisions, which we loved
No specific children’s facilities, but the staff are accommodating to family needs. Booked exclusively, the villa would be a wonderful beachside base for a large family group but, if sharing the space with other guests, the adult environment and tranquil atmosphere may be uncomfortable for families with young children
Bentota is a popular family beach resort area, in a good location for exploring the beauty of Sri Lanka’s southern coast. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about two hours.
