Inspiration
Set on a peaceful hillside among tea estates and verdant forest, Roseland Cottages is a small, family-run retreat that captures the quiet charm of Sri Lanka’s hill country.
Originally part of a working farm, the property now offers a rustic homestay experience with just four cottages spaced out for privacy. Each one is simply furnished with private balconies, ensuite bathrooms, and sweeping views of the surrounding valley. Décor is minimalist and rustic, simple wooden furniture and polished cement floors setting the tone throughout. Days here are slow and scenic, begin with the sunrise from your bed, explore local trails or waterfalls, and return to home-cooked meals made with organic produce from the garden. A quiet, off-grid escape near Bandarawela.
What we love
- The hotel offers informative tours of its onsite organic farm, tea and coffee plantations
- We loved the guided trek to the local waterfall, swimming in the river along the way
- The sunrises here are other-worldly and well worth waking early for
The location of this farm-stay is remote so there are no alternative dining options close by, given the exceptional quality and choice of the food provided we found this not to be an issue
The property has no alcohol licence so if you want to drink, you’ll need to bring your own
Families are welcome with the cottages accommodating up to four guests. Extra beds can be arranged on request. A small children’s play space with toys, board games and darts. Safe, open garden areas for children to explore including nature trails around the property. Home-cooked meals can be tailored to children’s tastes and early mealtimes available on request.
