Inspiration
Overlooking the Indian Ocean Talaramba Villas promises a luxurious beach retreat with southern Sri Lankan style perfection.
The two four-bedroomed villas which can be booked together or individually echo the architectural design of Sri Lankan farmhouses with broad ‘pila’ verandas offering expansive views out across the inky-blue swimming pools to the ocean beyond. The lawned gardens are criss-crossed with enticing pathways and multitude of secluded seating areas, scented by the ever-present frangipani and shaded by a plethora of palm, mango and cashew trees.
Inside, it’s pristine, paired back minimalism. White-washed walls offset dark teak furniture, artwork by revered Sri Lankan artists adorns open spaces and draped mosquito nets surround indulgent fourposter beds. The villas are fully staffed with the resident chef preparing food to your taste, from a deep dive into regional Sri Lankan cuisine to a full raft of international options.
What we love
- The option to arrive by air-taxi adds to the glamour of this property, hop off your international flight directly onto a sea plane, flying you between a riverside Buddhist temple in Colombo to Koggala Lake, twenty minutes from the villa
- The ever-present roar of the ocean, the heavenly scents of the tropical gardens and the shifting colours of the skies here are a sensorial feast
- The staff at the villas are second to none, with your every whim taken care of so you can entirely relax
- Just the other side of the garden fence, you can watch the traditional stilt fishermen catching their daily haul
You can book just one of these villas but may have another group enjoying the one next door. With plenty of space to roam and two very separate pools, this feels akin to having your own private hotel space
The ocean directly outside the garden gate does pound with dangerously large swells but a short walk around the headland takes you to the safe bathing bay of Mirissa’s Beach
Children warmly welcomed and well catered for, roll away children’s beds available in every room. Villa Vatura has a toddler-friendly section to its pool, with shallower depths for maximum safety.
The villas are specifically designed to take advantage of the gentle coastal winds, with floor to ceiling windows and large verandas providing natural ventilation, reducing the need for air conditioning. Water at both villas is provided by two on-site wells and recycled water is used to irrigate the gardens. Local people are employed at the villas and regional handiworks and pieces of art are used within the décor, boosting the local employment economy.
Sitting on the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, the villas are 40 minutes east of Galle and 20 minutes west of Matara. Mirissa Beach, reputedly the best beach on the south coast, is a short walk or tuk tuk ride away. Transport can be arranged from the airport in Colombo, taking four hours along the scenic coast road or two hours on the new expressway.
