A gourmand’s insight into this vibrant city
Sri Lanka’s capital city is rapidly becoming something of a gastronomic hotspot. It’s the perfect place to explore a vast range of traditional Sri Lankan dishes influenced by every cultural corner of the island. You’ll find streetside stalls selling soft hoppers, restaurants serving rice-and-curry-based spreads fit for a king, including sambol, dhal and jackfruit curry topped with the freshest of fried fish. Roadside carts offer the iconic prawn patties (isso vade) and layered on top of this, we can direct you to the high-flying restaurants of pioneering young chefs, who are creating trailblazing new versions of age-old dishes.
It’s a city that calls out to food lovers to have a bit of fun and enjoy meals on various different levels. Firstly, spend a day at ground level, following in the age-old footsteps of locals by grazing on street food. You’ll find plenty of kades (small roadside stalls) where string hoppers, lamprais, biryani and spicy snacks known as ‘short eats’ will give you a cosmopolitan taste of the city. We realise that it can be a little bit daunting knowing where to start with street food, so if you want a local guide to lead you between some of the best kades, you can head out on our Colombo Street Food Walk, where you’ll not only visit our favourite stalls but hear the stories behind every dish and have time to chat to the chefs.
Secondly, dip your toes in the sea with long, authentic lunches eaten by the coast, where fresh fish straight from the boats is transformed with extraordinary panache. Finally, head to hidden terraces for candlelit dinners where you can feast on new flavours and enjoy bold creativity, washed down with cocktails of local arrack and island herbs.
This guide gives you a list of our current favourite places to eat in Colombo, from sophisticated fine dining to buzzy bars, we’ve tasted our way around the city to share the very best with you.
