Tintagel, a century-old presidential mansion, between whose walls much of Sri Lanka's modern political history has been created, made a much-awaited opening in December 2007 as a luxurious, ten-room boutique hotel. It is housed in one of Sri Lanka's most famous ancestral residences, once being the family home of the former president, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and her parents, both of whom were at one time, Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka. This stately mansion is centrally located in one of Colombo's most salubrious suburbs, Cinnamon Gardens, an ideal location for both holiday and business travellers, conveniently located near the city's leading restaurants, bars, galleries, shops and museums. The journey from the International Airport will take about one hour.
Introduction
Tintagel Colombo is the creation of Shanth Fernando, a Sri Lankan lifestyle designer and entrepreneur who also owns the Gallery Café - the capital's leading restaurant -- and the popular lifestyle home store Paradise Road. If it matches these ventures, its success is assured. The painstaking transformation of the house took just under three years as Shanth, assisted by architect Phillip Weeraratne, paid close attention to detail and refused to compromise on quality. The original colonial mansion remains with a few minor structural changes. An entirely new wing has been added at the rear which blends seamlessly, housing the exquisite bedroom suites, swimming pool and a small Spa. Elements of colonial architecture including high ceilings, ornate columns, arches and wooden floors have all been retained. Shades of white and ebony blended with vibrant red and black, permeate the interiors. Furnishings are exquisite: sofas from Portugal, hand-spun silk and woollen rugs from Nepal, modern art, silver gilded chandeliers and Egyptian cotton bedding. Tintagel will appeal to discerning travellers looking for stylish and luxurious accommodation in the centre of Colombo. We recommend it highly.

Accommodation
Tintagel Colombo has 10 a/c suites: three Superior Suites, five Executive Suites, and two Junior Suites all with unique interiors and ensuite bathrooms with bath tubs and showers. Rooms are furnished with king-size four-poster beds with luxurious bedding including 400 thread count Egyptian cotton linen and a pillow menu. The Superior Suites have attached sitting rooms. The Executive Suites are slightly smaller but still have comfortable sitting areas. The smaller Junior Suites have the advantage of a large roof terrace offering plenty of sun-lounging. Other in-room facilities include LCD screen TV's on the walls with in-built DVD players, a Bose ipod station (ipod on request), wireless internet access throughout the property, IDD phone facilities, a personal safe, mini-bar and coffee/tea-making facilities.

Superior Suites: The luxurious Superior Suites cover a total area of up to 650 sq ft and have separate lounge area, bedroom, private balcony or courtyard and ensuite bathroom with dressing area. The North West Suite, which is the largest, has a private plunge pool and light interiors that creates a peaceful ambience ideally-suited for a romantic getaway.

Executive Suites: These suites cover an area of about 450 sq ft and consist of an open plan set-up with lounge, sleeping area, an outdoor private balcony or courtyard for dining, and ensuite bathroom with dressing area. The two Executive Suites located on the ground floor of the old wing (East Suite & North East Suite) are linked through the courtyard and is suitable for a family with children. If booked separately, the two suites remain utterly private.

Junior Suites: Covering an area of about 300 sq ft, the two Junior Suites located on the upper floor opens out to spacious balcony areas for lounging or private dining. The East Junior Suite is located opposite the North East Superior Suite, making these two suites also ideal for a family with children.
Facilities
Paradise Road Gallery Café is the first port of call for the discerning Colombo diner, and is renowned for its excellent fusion cuisine and seductive atmosphere. Tintagel maintains these high standards of Sri Lankan and international cuisine, which is served alfresco-style in their oudoor restaurant, The Courtyard, or indoors in an intimate dining room. Meals are also served in the privacy of your own balcony or courtyard adjoining your suite. The new wing has an elegant private dining and function room for private entertaining which can seat up to 20. The Red Bar with its stunning red walls, antique-gilded Parisian mirror and black leather lounging chairs makes for an ideal stop for a nightcap. The Library is furnished with leather lounging chairs, a writing desk and a library with over 500 leather-bound books, LCD screen with DVD/CD player, computer and wireless internet access. Recreational facilities include a magnificent lap pool with a timber deck, a small gym, steam room, and Spa which offers a range of relaxing therapies and beauty treatments provided by Crown, a well-respected hair and beauty Salon in Colombo. If preferred, the spa treatments can also be provided in the privacy of your own suite. Tintagel Colombo is also well organised to hold weddings and will make all arrangements from the actual ceremony to the reception dinner. There are plans for a Paradise Road gift store within the premises, where guests can purchase Shanth's signature lifestyle products. Until such time, guests can shop at any of the other three Paradise Road outlets in the city with Tintagel guests being provided with a special 10% discount on all items.
Excursions
Colombo is a compact and manageable city that is easily explored. Experience its colonial architecture with a visit to the Fort - Colombo's three-mile long rampart originally built in the sixteenth century by the Portuguese and then further developed by the Dutch and the British. Today, it is the commercial hub of the country consisting of government offices, banks, five-star hotels and the country's largest wholesale bazaar. Here, many of the old colonial buildings jostle for attention with the rest of Colombo's modern skyline. Interesting places to visit within the Fort include the Galle Face Hotel (once the mansion of a British Governor), the Presidential Secretariat (previously the Parliament house), the General Post Office building (the Delft Gateway built during the Dutch period), and the Fort Police Station (previously a Dutch hospital), St. Peter's Church and the Wovendaal Church located by the Grand Oriental Hotel. For those interested in more contemporary Sri Lankan architecture, Tintagel will organise a tour of some of late Geoffrey Bawa's creations. Sri Lanka's most renowned and iconic architect, Bawa was responsible for linking the ancient architecture of this island with that of the modern world. The tour can include a visit to his private home, the Parliament building in Kotte, and Bawa's office which now houses the Paradise Road Gallery Café. Golfers will enjoy the Royal Colombo Golf Club, a short 20-minute drive away.
