Why House is set amidst tranquil gardens in the village of Mihiripenna, 1 km inland from Thalpe, Galle's upmarket beach resort. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take about four-and-a-quarter hours or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala, which is a 15 minute drive.
Introduction
Why House consists of a spacious main house, a garden villa, and two cottages in three acres of tropical gardens. The architecture is typical of Sri Lanka's south with verandahs, courtyards and high timber roofs. Interiors are vibrant and furnished with plush sofas, antique style furniture, colourful murals and photographs of old Ceylon. Life unfolds at your pace at the Why House. There are no fixed meal times or pre-planned activities. Each meal is a treat with three in-house chefs specialising in Sri Lankan and international cuisine. Why house can be booked by the room and is ideal for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

Accommodation
The bedrooms are located in the Main House, Garden Villa and the two Cottages. All the rooms are tastefully furnished and vary in their décor. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, cable TV, DVD player, mini-bar, wifi internet, tea/coffee facility, room service and laundry service. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.

Main House: The main house is situated closer to the swimming pool and has a spacious living area with a central courtyard. There are three double rooms in the Main House with each having a lounge area that can be converted easily into a second bedroom to accommodate a child. The bedrooms are furnished with four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting and open out to private verandahs overlooking the gardens.

Garden Villa:Situated closer to the entrance, the Garden Villa has three bedrooms with king-size beds opening out to private verandahs.

Cottages: There are two interestingly-designedcottages at the edge of the property and closer to the swimming pool. Each cottage has two sections - a bedroom and a corridor leading to a spa bathroom. These rooms are more compact.
Facilities
Meals are served in the garden pavilion, in the privacy of your own verandah, or by the poolside. Tasty Sri Lankan rice and curries and Kottu roti, Thai, Chinese, Malay and typical English treats are served here. The Why House is well known for their breads, cakes, and desserts.The chefs are happy to share their recipes with guests who are keen to learn cookery. A range of beverages including home made ginger beer, Ceylon tea, fresh juices, and a range of cocktails are on offer. Non-resident guests are also welcome to dine at the Why House with prior booking. Other facilities include a large salt water swimming pool set amidst lush tropical gardens; and Ayurvedic and Aromatherapy massages. The Why House welcomes families with children and will prepare special meals as required. A baby sitter can also be arrangedwith prior notice.
Excursions
Explore the village of Mihiripennewith its wayside boutiques and village temple. Swimming and surfing is ideal in Thalpe or Unawatuna bay. Wijeya Beach, a popular beach side restaurant serving fusion cuisine, is also located nearby. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. Whale watching excursions into the deep seas are organised by Mirissa Water Sports during the season from December to April when the seas are calm. Visit Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of cultural influences. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, the grand old lighthouse staring into the Indian Ocean, the narrow streets, interesting restaurants and boutique hotels full of character, Galle Fort deserves hours of exploration.
