Zhiwaling Ascent

Thimphu, Bhutan
Banner image image
Set on a quiet hillside overlooking Bhutan’s capital, Zhiwaling Ascent’s striking blend of Bhutanese farmhouse and monasterial architecture offers a calm yet accessible retreat close to Thimphu, where the city’s energy fades into forested slopes, pine-scented air, and distant mountain ridges. The hotel feels intimate and thoughtful, a place where light, space and the natural surroundings are the defining elements. Viewed from the hotel’s terraces and balconies, the valley stretches out below, its quiet rhythm inviting guests to pause, reflect and observe the subtle movements of city life and mountain weather alike.

The rooms and suites at Zhiwaling Ascent are striking in their clarity and restraint, leaning into contemporary comfort, whilst encompassing subtle Bhutanese motifs. Interiors are light and airy, with clean lines, soft neutral palettes and understated materials that create a sense of calm and openness. Large windows and private terraces frame the valley and forest beyond, making the natural environment an integral part of each space. Each room feels paired back and effortlessly liveable, with modern comforts and uncluttered layouts that emphasise ease, functionality and a quiet sense of luxury without excess.

Dining at Zhiwaling Ascent is relaxed but considered, drawing on the best of Bhutanese ingredients and familiar international flavours. Menus are seasonal, with a focus on fresh, balanced dishes, whether enjoyed indoors in the light-filled dining area or outdoors on the rooftop, terraces and lawns overlooking the valley. The setting allows meals to feel connected to the landscape, giving every breakfast, lunch or dinner a quietly memorable quality.

Wellbeing and mindful experiences are central to the hotel’s rhythm. Yoga and meditation areas open directly onto the hillside, where the scent of pine and the changing light of the valley shape moments of calm. Gentle walks along nearby trails, quiet observation from terraces and small curated excursions within Thimphu allow guests to engage with both the city and the surrounding mountains at a measured, reflective pace. The overall approach is restorative, offering a sense of stillness and presence that complements the modern simplicity of the hotel itself.

Zhiwaling Ascent is a distinctive urban retreat, where contemporary design and comfort meet the subtle grandeur of the Bhutanese landscape. It offers a serene base for exploring Thimphu, allowing guests to experience the capital and its surroundings from a perspective that is both elevated and quietly refreshing.

What we love

    • The eye-catching design of the hotel building with its carved wood façade, expansive glass windows and vast flat roof.
    • It’s a hotel created for moments of quiet reflection, either on private balconies or in sunlit communal spaces, where pine-scented air and distant mountains provide a sense of perspective and calm.
    • Curated excursions and experiences immerse guests in local culture, from guided city walks to visits to monasteries and artisan workshops, offering insight into the rhythms of Thimphu life.

The hotel’s location on a hillside requires a short drive to reach the city centre, which is worth planning for when scheduling excursions or city errands.

Zhiwaling Ascent has a calm, measured atmosphere; travellers seeking a more bustling urban scene may find the pace deliberately restrained.

While the hotel offers terraces and common areas with views, some rooms overlook the hillside rather than the valley, so checking room orientation may be important if you’re prioritising expansive vistas.

Zhiwaling Ascent welcomes families, with rooms and suites that allow flexibility and shared space. While the hotel does not have a formal children’s programme, families can enjoy gentle cultural and nature-based experiences together, from walking nearby trails to exploring the city at a reflective pace. The hotel’s calm and modern environment provides a comfortable setting for children who are happy to move at a slower, more observant rhythm.
The hotel emphasises sustainability and local connection. Staff are drawn from the surrounding region, and local ingredients are incorporated into menus whenever possible. Materials and design elements support regional artisans, while thoughtfully curated guest experiences foster awareness of Thimphu’s cultural and natural environment. Zhiwaling Ascent strives to provide tourism that enriches the city and its people while treading lightly on its hillside setting.
Zhiwaling Ascent sits among the pine trees in the hills, just above the heart of Thimphu, providing panoramic views over the valley and distant mountains. Cultural landmarks, shops, monasteries and markets are within easy reach by car, while the hillside location ensures a calm retreat from the bustle of the city. Paro International Airport is approximately a 1.5-hour drive away, making the hotel an ideal base for exploring western Bhutan while remaining quietly removed from the centre of town.

What our travellers say

If Red Dot ever ceased to exist and I wanted to return to Sri Lanka I would probably go somewhere else instead. They were, in every way shape and form, impeccable. From Samanthie who created the itinerary to Wicky who drove us here, there and everywhere I cannot imagine anybody doing it better. Impeccable. I need say no more except it doesn’t get any better.

We chose this company as we wanted our money to benefit the people of Sri Lanka rather than international companies. Their work supports smaller businesses, projects and communities as well as the environment

Our 11th visit to this magical Island with always something new to discover and see. This time we made it up north to Jaffna, via Mannar Island, after beginning in the tea country and acclimatising to the heat, after leaving a very cold UK in January. We had total confidence that RedDot would organise everything to perfection, having used them many times before

We had a fantastic holiday. The itinerary and choice of hotels was spot on, and seamlessly organised.

Exceptional tour of Sri Lanka with Dami. We cannot recommend Dami at Red dot tours highly enough. As our guide over 9 days he made sure that our trip to Sri Lanka was unforgettable- always going above & beyond to impart his knowledge, show us things off the beaten track, looking after us, getting us to try many local delicacies & making us laugh .. a LOT. Cannot imagine anyone doing a better job- if we could take him with us on every holiday we would!

Dulmini did a great job listening to our wishes and arranged an itinerary that was very busy but met all our needs. Sisira, our guide, was outstanding, providing us with great local knowledge and suggesting other activities on our travels. He was a great driver on the busy Sri Lankan roads, was always punctual but above all added colour to the whole trip.

I cannot recommend Red Dot Tours more highly. Thank you so much to Samanthie for her patience with me and all her hard work at putting together the perfect itinerary for my family. I had done a lot of research before I contacted Red Dot and Samanthie created a tour that fitted in all the activities we wanted to do and secured the hotels I told her we would like to stay in (not easy to do in high season).

Wow what can I say, from start to finish we have had a wonderful holiday with Red Dot Tours. Dulmini was so helpful in putting an itinerary together for us as a family of 6 and catering to all of our needs. We have ticked off so many of Sri Lanka’s beautiful sights during our trip. Dulmini and Dhanu were a great help to us while we were out on our travels too.

We spent 13 days on a Bawa tour with wonderful driver and guide Manjula, including Kandalama Heritance, The Kandy House, The Last House, Jetwing Yala, Jetwing Lighthouse and Club Villa hotels. We are 3 friends, one of them in the wheelchair. Dulmini Ekanayake from Red Dot Tours was very helpful and very patient and found solutions to all our special demands.

The itinerary was absolutely perfect and the hotels wonderful, especially Thotalagala, The Warden’s House and 41 Lighthouse Street. Our driver, Indika, was a delight-charming, knowledgeable, considerate and always punctual; he showed us more of this amazing country than we could have hoped for!

Wanted to take a moment to thank RedDot Tours, and specifically Jayandi for helping book a wonderful family vacation for my family and I. First time for my family and Jayandi took care of every detail, was so courteous and professional, and genuinely cared about our experience in SL. I would also like to mention Pradeep, our kind and understanding guide/chauffeur who took such good care of us while we were out and about. I cannot recommend RedDot enough!

We used Red Dot for the first time for our holiday in Sri Lanka. Dulmini put together such a wonderful experience for us, creating an itinerary she drew up after many discussions about what we like and also gave us suggestions for excursions and activities. It was totally bespoke and we were able to make changes throughout this process.

This is an excellent tour company. They planned our Sri Lankan holiday from start to finish. The trip was initially planned for 2022 but due to Covid and other issues we didn’t manage to undertake the trip until this year. Throughout all this time we had the same travel advisor Lahiru who responded quickly to my emails and rearranged and adjusted our holiday each year!

As a group of 8 we have had the most fabulous tour of Sri Lanka organised by Dulmini from RedDot who totally understood my brief of "some" culture, agriculture, nature, trekking and relaxation. The hotels chosen were a wonderful mixture of homestay, tented and pure luxury (Ceylon Tea Trails). The experiences to local villages, trekking the Pekoe Trail and climbing Pidurangala were memorable and our wonderful guide, Ananda, was so informative and knowledgeable and adapted to our needs admirable (not easy with a group of 8)
