Anuradhapura
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura is dotted with impressive and unique ancient dagobas, otherwise known as stupas, alongside remnants of palaces, monasteries and monuments.
One of the most northerly and most sacred ancient cities in Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura was built around a cutting from the tree of enlightenment, which means it's still very much revered in Sri Lanka and remains a devout place for Buddhist worshippers.
The original city was abandoned in 993, after this religious capital florished for an incredible 1300 years. Anuradhapura combines brilliantly with Sigiriya, Polonnaurwa and Dambulla and is particularly interesting for those with a passion for religious or cultural history.
