Cultural Triangle / Ancient Cities
Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is the islands' ancient heart and is home to an extraordinary collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The triangle stretches from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa and Kandy, and within this region there are many timeless monuments that reveal more than 2,000 years of history. Even by global standards, this region is mesmerising, so time here is best spent with our knowledgable and engaging guides and local hosts. Sigiriya, the iconic rock fortress, is one of Sri Lanka's most impressive ancient cities; it rises above the jungle and as you walk up you are met with original frescoes, water gardens, and sweeping views. Polonnaruwa’s royal ruins and colossal stone Buddhas reflect a golden age of the kings and Dambulla’s cave temples, one of our favourite stops, glow with gilded statues and frescoed ceilings. Anuradhapura’s and Mihintale's sacred Bo tree, grown from the tree under which Buddha found enlightenment, continues to draw pilgrims today.
