Sigiriya
Sigiriya Rock is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic images, soaring out of the ground, this ancient citadel is something not to be missed.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya can be climbed on foot which is best done early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat. A mixture of ancient steps and winding staircases take you to the top, with ancient frescos adorning some of the walls.
Staying in or around Sigiriya is also a good idea if you want to visit nearby Polonnaruwa, Minneriya or even Anuradhapura. For those feeling more active, it's also possible to climb Pidurangala rock, which provides the most beautiful views of Sigiriya. We highly recommend both of you are of reasonable fitness. Please note that if you are staying nearby to Sigiriya, it's easy to explore other historical sites and ancient cities in the area, such as Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and even Minneriya National Park.
