Perched in a 10 acre estate, less than 10 minutes by tuk-tuk from Ahangama and Kabalana Beach, means guests get the best of both worlds, and in our opinion with no compromises. Ahangama is easily one of Sri Lanka's best foodie spots and is great for surfers, and from Tekanda it's a short hop by tuk-tuk or a brisk 25 minute walk. At the same time, staying at Tekanda means you are surrounded by secondary jungle and 10 acres of plantation; both tea and cinnamon are grown here.
Whilst some want to sleep in the hustle and bustle of Ahangama, many would prefer the serenity close by and that's what Tekanda offers; views of paddy fields and jungle don't come much better than this and it's not uncommon to see Purple Faced Langur monkeys around the lodge. Run by Richard and Charlie, the most welcoming British couple, gives the lodge a further edge. They are passionate about the local surf, the sustainable design, their education centre in the local village and the girls cricket team that they've set up locally as well. This is far more than just a lodge and guests are welcomed into it instantly. Rooms are divided between the main Lodge Rooms, of which there are four, and two Cabanas. The four Lodge Rooms are in the main building, linked by a pretty internal courtyard. They are beautifully designed. The Cabanas are separate and offer more privacy and seclusion. Each Lodge Room shares an additional communal living space.
What we love
- A seriously stunning lodge that has been well thought out with a sustainable ethos
- It sits on a beautiful plantation, but is less than 10 minutes to Kabalana Beach by tuk tuk
- Richard and Charlie set up the lodge and are hands on with keeping the property running very smoothly
- We love all the projects that Richard and Charlie run locally
- The rooms are stylish, natural and spacious and the thatched roofs keep them cool
- The infinity pool is one of our favourites in Sri Lanka; take a dip at night and you'll often be surrounded by fireflies
- With only six rooms this could be a perfect option for multi generational families wanting privacy
It's clearly not directly on the beach but now that the coast is getting a little busier, we think think that's good for a lot of people. Tekanda will organise a tuk tuk down to the beach and it's quick and easy
We love the communal dining area, but it's not for everyone. Richard and Charlie ensure guests don't ever feel that pressure and can set up other locations for you to dine privately around the lodge, which we also love. The area also has loads of good restaurants.
It isn't luxurious, but it's stylish, beautiful and very comfortable
Kids over 6 are welcome. If you take the whole property then kids under 6 are welcome.
The use of natural materials, restoring the plantation, and The Tekanda Foundation all adds to an overwhelming feeling of giving back.
30 minutes from Galle, less than 10 minutes from Ahangama and Kabalana Beach. Guests can also walk to Ahangama, which takes around 25 minutes.
Fishing on Koggala Lake, surf in Kabalana, eat out in Ahangama, estate walks, visit the local village and projects run by Tekanda, get the train to Galle, enjoy the fireflies at night, visit Galle Cricket Ground, yoga, in room massages, relax around the infinity pool.
