Galle
Galle is thriving and undoubtedly one of Sri Lanka's gems.
The fortified old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is enjoying an artistic renaissance and the beautiful beaches around it are dotted with spoiling villas and pretty boutique hotels. Influenced heavily by the Portuguese, Dutch and more recently the British, inside the fort you'll find the iconic lighthouse, pealing colonial buildings, small boutiques, cafes, pretty hotels, ancient churches, tiny houses, small temples and even street vendors.
It's busy and atmospheric, even in low season but this tappers off at night when it's relatively quiet. It's arguably one of the best examples of this kind in South Asia. The revival of Galle has also influenced its coastline and it is this area, predominantly south of the town, where we prefer to use the term 'Galle coast'. It is also the gateway to the upmarket beach settlement of Thalpe and the sandy beaches of Unawatuna, Koggala and Habaraduwa
