Culture and History in the South Coast

The south coast of Sri Lanka has a vibrant culture, heavily influenced by tourism, and there are many activities on offer in this region which cover a wide range of interests, whether you want to explore the island’s rural day-to-day life or simply loll on one of the spectacular beaches.

The main industries of Sri Lanka’s south coast are fishing and tourism. Tangalle, a popular Sri Lanka holiday destination for travellers who are in search of some sun, sand and sea, is also a key fishing port for this region – visit Tangalle Harbour in the early morning and watch them bringing in the day’s catch on colourful catamarans. Another industry to explore here is the handwoven Beeralu lace (pillow lace) created by the rural women in this area, an intricate, handmade material that is woven into exquisite table cloths, doilies and clothing accessories. Go to Dickwella and see this delicate fabric being made: recognised as a national craft, it is an important source of income for many.

Many who visit the south cannot tear themselves away from the beaches, and not just because the golden sands fringed by swaying palms and turquoise waves are stunning to behold: there are also a wide range of water-sports on offer, predominantly at the popular Mirissa Bay – although there are several fantastic surf spots all along the south coast, in particular Matara, Midigama and Weligama. Dickwella has an excellent dive site.

The history of Sri Lanka’s south coast is best explored by visiting Mulgirigala Rock Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple which dates back 2,000 years that is perched on a towering rock over 200m high just 30 minutes inland from Tangalle. After a tiring climb, you will be rewarded with magnificent views of the Indian Ocean and a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere.
